(1c) Dull Blue, Franklin Carrier (LO1). Mostly large margins to clear at top left, bright shade, sharp impression, red star cancel applied at Philadelphia, large sealed tear and couple small thin spots, Very Fine appearance, a rare stamp, with 1989 P.F. certificate
Baltimore Md., 1c Black (1LB8). Reconstruction of the pane of ten comprised of block of three and singles, including Position 2 with short rays and Position 7 with "SENT", three unused (no gum), others original gum, few small faults, Fine-Very Fine and attractive, Scott Retail as singles
Jenkins' Camden Dispatch, Camden N.J., (unstated value) Black, Lithographed, Fine Impression (89L1). Margins to touched, used with 3c Dull Red, Ty. II (11A), tied by partly clear strike of Camden N.J. circular datestamp on cover to Providence R.I., original enclosure from Camden dated Feb. 27, 1855, missing backflap and minor cover nicks, appears Very Fine, one of only about a dozen covers recorded with the Jenkins' Dispatch 89L1 issue, and only a few are to-the-mails uses with U.S. postage (two others listed in Power Search), an overview of the post and different stamp printings is provided in the description of lot 1273 in our Golden sale (Sale 817).
Letter Express (Wells), 10c Black on Pink Glazed, Half used as 5c (96L3a). Top half, tied by pen cancel on large portion of westbound cover front addressed to Rev. Hicks in Chicago, conjunctive service and mixed franking with Pomeroy's Letter Express and American Letter Mail Company stamps, pair of Pomeroy's Letter Express 5c Lake on Thin Bond (117L6), tied by pen cancels, two slightly overlapping singles of American Letter Mail Co., 5c Black (5L1), red "Paid" straightline cancels, the Wells stamp with typical oxidation, other stamps with couple small flawsVERY FINE APPEARANCE. ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED INDEPENDENT MAIL USES WITH STAMPS OF THREE DIFFERENT COMPANIES.
This partial cover front demonstrates the cooperation among Independent Mail companies that allowed them to provide service across a huge area for significantly lower rates than the U.S. Post Office charged. It also shows how postage was divided among the participating service providers by using each other's stamps. A thorough explanation of how this worked can be found in our description of the incomparable complete eastbound cover with three company stamps, offered in our sale of the Puliafito collection (Siegel Sale 1124, lot 210). That is the only complete cover and is widely acknowledged as the greatest item of the Independent Mail period. It is franked with stamps of the same three companies as the front offered here, but each from a different issue. This item is a new discovery and has never before appeared at auction.

Large to huge margins, cancelled by light strike of red "Cd." on Aug. 1, 1844 partial folded notice from the Exchange Bank of Buffalo to Albany N.Y., parts of notice missing but two backflaps intact, slightly toned file fold far from stamp, and Extremely Fine stamp
Pomeroy's Letter Express, 5c Black on Yellow Surface-Colored Paper (117L1). Large margins to clear, slightly oxidized, pen cancelled and tied by file fold, clear strike of red "Boyd's City Express Post, July 28 9 O'C" framed datestamp and "Paid/J.T.B." handstamp on 1844 folded letter to New York, missing one leaf of letter but cover is intact, stamp creased from file fold, Fine and scarce conjunctive use, accompanied by a cover front bearing Pomeroy's No. 117L4, pen cancelled, creased by file fold and small tear, otherwise Fine
Pomeroy's Letter Express, (5c) Black on Yellow Surface-Colored Paper, Value Incomplete (117L2). Large even margins all around, bright color, manuscript cancel, used on folded letter datelined from Rochester N.Y. on Aug. 15, 1844, addressed to Fulton Street in New York City, bold red "Boyd's City Express Post, Aug. 17 9 O'C" framed datestamp, some internal letter splits not affecting front or back of cover, Extremely Fine stamp, a desirable and rare use, this comes from one of the eight (at least) positions on the plate with the value "20 for $1" incomplete ("$1" removed), this state of the plate was used only for printing stamps in Black on Yellow paper, the Independent Mails book reports 21 covers with the Value Incomplete stamp in the Pomeroy census, this comes from a new find and has not been listed before, Scott Retail on cover not tied
Pomeroy's Letter Express, 5c Black on Thin Bond (117L4). Large to ample margins all around, cancelled by red "Cd." handstamp which indents and creates tiny paper break, without pen cancel on Aug. 1, 1844 quarterly statement from the Agricultural Bank of Herkimer N.Y. to the comptroller in Albany, file fold far from stamp and some internal splits not affecting the front of back of the cover, fresh and Very Fine stamp on an attractive cover
Pomeroy's Letter Express, Complete Sheet Remainders/Reprints (117L). Ten complete sheets of 40, range of colors including Yellow, Blue, Black, Red, Orange and Brown, on several different types of paper, a couple with a small flaw or fold between panes, overall Very Fine, it is not definitively known if there were reprints of the Pomeroy stamps or if all the sheets such as those offered here were remainders, with some issued for use and some unissued (see Independent Mails book, pp. 452-454)
1907, Official Seal, Blue, Printed on Both Sides (OX13f). Mint N.H., second impression printed under gum and inverted compared to front impression, natural s.e. at bottom, Very Fine, few examples are believed to exist, listed but unpriced in Scott
Brooklyn Sanitary Fair, 10c Green (WV7). Original gum, huge margins, Extremely Fine, approximately 25-30 copies known, ex Fekete, with 2014 P.F. certificate
Brooklyn Sanitary Fair, 10c Green, Tete-Beche Pair (WV7a). Part original gum, large margins all around, bright and fresh EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF THREE RECORDED TETE-BECHE PAIRS OF THE BROOKLYN SANITARY FAIR 10-CENT GREEN. A MAJOR RARITY OF THIS FASCINATING FIELD.
