Sale 1221, Lot 1782, Revenues, Silver Tax$1.00 Gray, "Series 5942" Error, Silver Tax (RG95a). Bottom left stamp in a block of four with three normal "1942", small h.r. at bottom, bright color

FRESH AND FINE. AN INCREDIBLY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE $1.00 1942 SILVER TAX ISSUE, WITH THE "SERIES 5942" ERROR. VERY FEW ARE KNOWN.

Prior to this sale we have never offered another example of this rarity since keeping computerized records. Our digital library contains one offered in the Joyce sale with similar centering (which was also offered in the Phillip Little collection, Siegel Sale 248, in 1962). One was offered in the Weill stock in 1990 as part of a group of four denominations of the variety; it was not illustrated but was described as perfs touching. Other famous Silver Tax collections, such as Sohn, Tolman, "Scarsdale", and Inman, did not have this rarity.
