Sale 1362, Lot 1933, 1918-20 Issues and Later Issues (Scott 525-599A)

2c Carmine, Ty. VII, Imperforate (534B). Vertical pair, huge margins all around including traces of four adjoining stamps, tied by two strikes of Oct. 1 New Hampshire duplex datestamps, yeardate appears to be 1923 which would make this a contemporary cancel

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A PHENOMENAL USED VERTICAL PAIR OF THE RARE 2-CENT TYPE VII IMPERFORATE OFFSET STAMP, USED ON A PIECE WITH A CONTEMPORARY CANCEL. THIS IS WITHOUT QUESTION THE FINEST USED PAIR WE HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED AND ONE OF ONLY TWO USED VERTICAL PAIRS CONTAINED IN OUR RECORDS.

Most Type VII stamps were used by private vending and affixing machine companies. However, unlike Scott 314A and 482A, a small supply of the imperforate 2c Type VII stamps did reach the public. Our informal review of auction catalogues and the records of The Philatelic Foundation found four blocks of four and ten pairs, of which only seven are sound. This is one of only two vertical pairs we have encountered.

With ungraded 2005 P.S.E. certificate (we do not think they grade stamps on piece). With 2013 P.S.A.G. certificate (Superb 98 Jumbo).

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE ONE-CENT ROTARY COIL WASTE ISSUE, SCOTT 545.

By their very nature, rotary press waste stamps are extremely difficult to obtain with such choice centering. The production process was far less precise, resulting in many off-center stamps. The stamps were not meant to be perforated on the flat-plate perforating machines, which were set for a slightly different size of stamp.

With 2008 P.S.E. certificate (XF Superb 95 Jumbo). Only three grade higher (two at 98, one at 98J). We have not offered any higher since 2007. Only three others share this desirable grade. This is the first in this grade we have offered since our 2016 "Hanover" sale.
