$1.00 Deep Brown (518b). Rich color in the true Deep Brown shade, detailed impression, beautiful wide and balanced margins, unusual for this difficult issue, bold strike of Sandusky O. oval registry cancel

EXTREMELY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1917 $1.00 IN THE DEEP BROWN SUB-SHADE.

According to Johl, a small number of stamps were printed in this distinctive shade early in the issue of the 1917 $1.00 stamp. During the course of the six years that the stamp was issued, all other printings were made in the Violet Brown shade. Used examples of this shade are difficult to find with centering as choice as the example offered here.

With 2006 P.F. and 2013 P.S.A.G. certificates (both XF 90). When we offered this stamp in the Kirke sale it had a 2011 P.S.E. certificate (VF-XF 85; SMQ $2,100), but that certificate no longer accompanies.

2c Carmine (519). Mint N.H., unusually choice centering with well-proportioned margins, radiant color and detailed impression

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A BEAUTIFUL MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF 2-CENT PERF 11 DOUBLE-LINE WATERMARKED ISSUE, SCOTT 519, GRADED OF SUPERB 98 BY P.S.E. — EASILY ONE OF THE FINEST IN EXISTENCE.

This stamp was created in 1917 when a small excess supply of the imperforate, double-line watermarked Scott 344 was returned by the New York City post office to the Bureau for credit. Rather than issue the credit, the Bureau perforated the sheets with the current perf 11 wheels and returned them to the New York City post office for public sale.

With 2012 P.S.E. certificate (Superb 98). Only three have equaled this lofty grade, which is the highest awarded.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 2-CENT PERF 11 DOUBLE-LINE WATERMARK ISSUE, SCOTT 519, GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E. — THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED.

With 2012 P.S.E. certificate (XF-Superb 95). This is the highest grade awarded and it is shared by only one other — the ex "Natalee Grace" copy we first offered in 2012. However, that stamp has developed some slight fading from the long-ago removal of toning, so if it were re-graded, it is doubtful it would still be a 95.
