Positions 6-7/16-17R1L, block of four, bottom stamps Mint N.H., top stamps lightly hinged, large margins to just in at bottom and top right, wonderful deep rich color, a remarkable early impression from Plate 1 LateFINE-EXTREMELY FINE. A RARE BLOCK OF FOUR OF THE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE IV FROM PLATE ONE LATE, CONTAINING TWO SIGNIFICANT POSITIONS AT TOP. IN THE EARLY STATE OF PLATE ONE, THE TOP RIGHT POSITION 7R PRODUCED THE RARE TYPE I AND THE TOP LEFT POSITION 6R PRODUCED TYPE Ib. THIS BLOCK IS AN EARLY IMPRESSION FROM THE REWORKED PLATE AND SHOWS MANY OF THE ENGRAVING DETAILS THAT MAKE TYPES I AND IB SO SIGNIFICANT.
This rare block from the top row of the right pane of Plate 1 Late contains Positions 6R and 7R, the same positions that produced Types Ib and I (respectively) on Plate 1 in its early state, before it was reworked and recut. This block shows one of the earliest and clearest impressions known from Plate 1 Late. Position 7R1L at top right has mostly complete plumes at bottom and the pronounced double transfer, details that disappeared as the plate wore from extensive use.

3c Orange Brown, Dull Red (10-11A). 13 used stamps, beautifully mounted on printed index cards representing each of the 13 plates or states of plates used for the 3c imperforate issues, cards detail the colors and recuts found on each plate, also a list of the experts who plated each of the stamps, incl. Dr. Chase, Dr. Amonette and others, gorgeous colors throughout, all stamps have four margins, Very Fine-Extremely Fine group
3c Orange Brown, Ty. I (10). Positions 60/70/80/90R1, vertical strip of four, original gum and possibly Mint N.H. (it is difficult to make an exact determination), mostly clear to large margins all around except just barely touching outer frame line in two small spots, wonderful sharp color and proof-like impression, horizontal crease between each stamp mostly confined to margins between stamps and slight separation at right between top pairFINE-VERY FINE. A SPECTACULAR ORIGINAL-GUM MULTIPLE OF THE 3-CENT 1861 ORANGE BROWN.

3c Orange Brown, Ty. I (10). Position 91R1i, enormous margins all around incl. bottom left corner sheet margins with full guideline and part of adjoining stamp at right, rich color, neat strike of grid cancel, faint diagonal crease at bottom left only visible in fluid, otherwise Extremely Fine, an outstanding corner-margin stamp, corner-margin examples of the 3c Orange Brown are extremely rare, with 2004 P.F. certificate
3c Yellowish Orange Brown, Ty. I (10 var). Position 81R1E, large margins all around to just clear at upper left, brilliant color, neat strike of circular datestamp with clear "Sep 5" (1851), hinged to Dr. Amonette’s signed plating card for display, Very Fine and choice, a lovely example of one of the rarest shades of this issue, seen only from Plate 1E
3c Orange Brown, Ty. II (10A). Original gum, clear to large margins with part sheet margin at right, fresh, marvelous deep rich colorVERY FINE. THE 3-CENT 1851 ORANGE BROWN IS DIFFICULT TO FIND IN THIS EXCEPTIONALLY CHOICE ORIGINAL-GUM CONDITION.

3c Orange Brown, Part India Paper (10 var). Position 18L1E, large margins to just clear at top middle, rich color, neat strike of circular grid, measured for thickness (.0022 in.) and hinged to Dr. Amonette’s signed plating card for display, Very Fine, scarce variety seen only from Plate 1E
3c Orange Brown, Part India Paper Study Group (10-10A var). Four stamps identified by Dr. Chase, Hicks or Dr. Amonette as Part India Paper from Plate 1E, each position plated, measured for thickness and hinged to Dr. Amonette’s plating card for display, also incl. three additional stamps from Plate 1E identified as "thin paper" variety for comparison of paper color and texture, rich colors throughout, margins mostly clearFINE-VERY FINE AND SCARCE GROUP OF THE 3-CENT 1851 ORANGE BROWN ON PART INDIA PAPER. According to a write-up by Dr. Amonette included with this lot, the Part India Paper variety comes from a small batch of paper used soon after these stamps were first released on July 1, 1851. They are seen only from Plate 1E and the paper is a mixture of pure rag stock and fiber from the inner bark of the bamboo tree
3c Red, Ty. I, Plate Proof on India, Brush Stroke Obliteration (11P3). Block of four, sheet margin at right, margins large to clear other sides, rich color, small India paper wrinkle as normally found and of little significanceVERY FINE AND CHOICE. A SCARCE BLOCK OF FOUR FROM THE ORIGINAL PROOF SHEETS SENT IN 1854 FROM TOPPAN, CARPENTER & COMPANY TO GREAT BRITAIN FOR USE IN EARLY EXPERIMENTS TO PERFORATE UNITED STATES STAMPS.
In 1854 complete sheets of 200 3c India proofs from Plate 4 were sent by Toppan, Carpenter to Bemrose and Perkins Bacon in England for a perforating experiment. Each firm received left and right panes. All of the proofs were cancelled with brush strokes to prevent use as postage.

Block of five, original gum with small disturbance spots but never hinged, large margins to just in, bright color, few horizontal creases, Fine, this block was recently discovered between the pages of an old book and is offered to the market for the first time, it has never been hinged, but over time the gum has developed a few minor disturbance spots, Scott Retail as hinged
3c Dull Red, Ty. I (11). Positions 10/20L7, vertical pair, large margins to just clear incl. top right corner sheet margins, deep rich color, neat strikes of "10" handstamp, plated by Dr. Amonette, beautiful position piece, especially desirable with the cancel
3c Claret, Ty. I (11 var). Horizontal strip of three, enormous margins all around incl. sheet margin at right, significant portion of adjoining stamp at left, and also parts of adjoining stamps at top, neat strikes of town circular datestamp, rich color, Extremely Fine Gem, a superb strip in every respect, ex. Twigg-Smith, with 2009 P.F. certificate, Scott Retail as a strip of three with no premium for the Claret shade
3c Pinkish, Ty. I (11 var). Pos. 48L8, exceptionally beautiful color in the rare pink shade, large to huge margins, neat strike of circular datestamp, hinged to Dr. Amonette’s signed plating card which states "matches Dr. Chase's master color chart"EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A WONDERFUL AND EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE TRUE PINK SHADE OF THE 3C 1851 ISSUE IN THE FINEST ATTAINABLE CONDITION.
Accompanied by a signed note from Dr. Amonette stating "Finest color and finest copy of the rare pink shade I have ever seen."
This color was listed and priced at $3,500.00 in Scott until the 2009 edition of the catalog. It continues to be listed in the 2009 and 2010 editions, but for some reason is no longer priced

Huge margins all around incl. significant portion of adjoining stamps at top and bottom, part of adjoining stamp at right and sheet margin at left, brilliant color, well-struck New York circular datestamp, Extremely Fine Gem and especially desirable in the Brownish Carmine shade, with 2007 P.S.E. certificate (Gem 100; unpriced in SMQ above the grade of 98, SMQ $520.00 as 98), only three others have attained this grade to date, and only one has graded higher
