$1.00 1934 Hunting Permit, Photo Essays (RW1-E). $1.00 Black, 1945 Hunting Permit, Large Die Proof on Wove (RW12P1). Appears at first glance to be a small die proof, but its 53 x 38mm dimensions are larger than any of the small die proofs in this sale so we believe it is more likely a cut-down large die proof (both types of proofs were printed on wove paper), intense shade and detailed impression, small natural straw inclusion in right marginVERY FINE AND RARE DIE PROOF OF THE 1945 FEDERAL HUNTING PERMIT ISSUE, SCOTT RW12.
Federal Hunting Permit proofs are extremely rare in any form and for any issue. We have offered only one other example of RW12 as a large die proof -- a trial color proof in Blue which realized $18,000 hammer in our 2016 sale of the William Webster collection.
Accompanied by a 1954 invoice from Clarence Brazer calling this a small die proof and stating it is one of two known. While we feel this is more likely a large die proof, it is really immaterial as both are rarities and Scott value is the same.
