5c Orange Brown (1b). With recut left frameline, large margins, brilliant color, neat strike of blue grid cancel, Extremely Fine, a rare example of the Orange Brown with recut frameline (the weakened frameline opposite Franklin's forehead was recut at a certain point during 5c 1847 production), with 2010 P.F. certificate

10c Black (2). Unused (no gum), three huge margins, close but clear at bottom, deep shade and sharp impression, small thin spot and faint trace of soiling on the foreheadVERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN ATTRACTIVE AND RARE UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE 10-CENT 1847 ISSUE.
The 1847 Issue is much scarcer in unused condition than other issues, because the stamps were demonetized in 1851. They could be exchanged for the new issue, but once the exchange period ended, the stamps would have no postage value. Considering the purchasing power of ten cents in 1851, it is not surprising that the stamps were either used or exchanged, rather than left for future generations of collectors

A RARE USED STRIP OF THREE OF THE 10-CENT 1847 ISSUE.
Pairs or two singles would often be used on double 10c rate covers, but strips of three, blocks of four or other large multiples were infrequently used. As an indication of the rarity of 10c 1847 multiples larger than a pair, Scott assigns a value of $2,600.00 for a pair, but $10,00.00 for a strip of three.
This strip undoubtedly originated on a 30c Via Panama rate cover. The same type of manuscript cancellation is found on the 10c strip of three on cover offered in our Sale 1023 as lot 2259.
