AN EXCEPTIONAL PLATE BLOCK RARITY OF THE WASHINGTON-FRANKLIN ISSUES. THIS IS ONE OF POSSIBLY TWO MINT NEVER-HINGED PLATE NUMBER BLOCKS EXTANT OF THE $1.00 1912 DOUBLE-LINE WATERMARKED FRANKLIN ISSUE.
Scott 423 was printed from a single plate, which had plate numbers at top and bottom. This is one of the rarest of the Washington-Franklin Issue plate blocks in any gum condition. Lewis Kaufman records seven top and three bottom plate blocks, including another top plate block that was described as Mint N.H. in a 1947 sale held by H. R. Harmer (Bauer collection). After 66 years that plate block has not reappeared for sale or certification.

11c Dark Green (434). Rich color on bright paper, perfectly centered with Jumbo margins, neat strike of registry oval cancel, Extremely Fine Gem, a phenomenal stamp in every respect, with 2012 P.S.E. certificate (Gem 100; unpriced in SMQ above the grade of 98, SMQ $600.00 as 98)
12c Copper Red, "Pink Back" (435a var). Block of four with plate no. 6902 selvage at bottom, h.r., rich color with strong Pink Back, Very Fine and choice, a scarce block of the Pink Back variety, according to Scott Catalogue the aniline inks of some printings caused a pink tinge to permeate the paper and appear on the back, we have offered only three singles since keeping computerized records
