5c Green, Stone 1-2 (1). Two, ample to large margins, tied by blue "Norfolk Va. Apr. 7, 1862" double-circle datestamp on buff cover to Centre Ala. with red and blue 10-Star Confederate Flag and Verse Patriotic design (F10-16, Verse 46), "Sold only by Vickery & Company, Norfolk" imprint, reduced at right and tiny corner repair at top right (not affecting stamp), left stamp with faint margin crease at top, Very Fine, a colorful example of this 10-Star Flag Patriotic used with the 5c Green lithograph, this is also a scarce Confederate use from Norfolk, which was permanently occupied by Union forces one month after this cover was mailed, we have encountered only a few examples of this design, each used from Norfolk with General Issue stamps, and most are faulty to a far greater degree than the cover offered here, this is also the latest use of this design that we have offered, illustrated in Wishnietsky's Confederate Patriotic Covers and Their Usages on p. 60

Position 35 in place of Position 10, right sheet margin (not possible on normal Position 35), large margins at left and bottom showing traces of removed transfer, slightly in at top, cancelled by Tuscaloosa Star fancy cancel, "Tuscaloosa Al. May 10" (1862) circular datestamp on University of Alabama green lithographed cover to Demopolis where forwarded to Greenville Ala. (addressed in red) with 5c Green (1), top sheet margin (small tears), large at sides, touched at bottom, tied by "Demopolis Ala. May 14" circular datestamp, forwarded again to Columbus Miss. but no additional postage paidVERY FINE. THIS REMARKABLE COVER IS NOT ONLY AN UNUSUAL COMBINATION OF FORWARDING, A COLLEGE DESIGN AND FANCY CANCEL, BUT IT BEARS ONE OF THE FEW EXISTING EXAMPLES OF THE 5-CENT LITHOGRAPH MISPLACED-TRANSFER VARIETY.
Position 35 was copied and used to replace the damaged transfer occupying Position 10 on the printing stone. The right sheet margin, which only occurs along the right column of positions, and the traces of the old transfer in the bottom margin are characteristics identifying this as the Misplaced Transfer variety (Position 35 over 10).

Jan. 1" (1862) circular datestamp on legal-size "Confederate States of America, War Department." semi-official imprint (WD01) cover to Col. T.J. Warthen, 28th Georgia Regiment (name misspelled on cover), accompanied by War Department letterhead dated Dec. 31, 1861 to Col. Warthen and signed by Col. Albert T. Bledsoe, Chief Bureau, Very Fine and scarce combination of these two colonels, Bledsoe was a mathematics professor and staunch pro-slavery advocate who became a Confederate colonel, he wrote a treatise called "Liberty and Slavery" defending the institution as the proper societal order, after the war he was an architect of the "Lost Cause" myth

(Fitzhugh) Lee's Brigade", stamp with a small gum spot at top, missing backflap, still Very Fine, Company D was the "Clark Cavalry", the regiment fought in over 200 battles and skirmishes, this was sent by A. Henderson Byars, who enlisted in March 1862 as a private

Jan. 20" (1863) double-circle datestamp on cover to Major General John B. Magruder at Galveston, cover stain at top right affects sheet margin, slight soiling, otherwise Very Fine and a scarce use to this iconic general, who fought for the armies of three nations during his career (U.S., C.S.A. and Mexico), was noted for his leadership during the Peninsular Campaign in 1862 and who recaptured Galveston in early January 1863, shortly before this cover was sent to him there
