According to Johl (p. 143) this issue was mainly used for special mailing purposes such as samples and pamphlets which were sent out in large quantities by individual mailers and resulted in limited distribution among collectors.
With 1992, 2001 P.F. and 2017 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $8,500.00), only three have graded higher (one at 95J and two at 98) and only one other shares this desirable grade.

This issue is notoriously difficult to find in well-centered Mint N.H. condition.

3c Red Violet, Coil (456). Joint line strip of four, brilliant color in the Red Violet shade, choice centering, registry oval cancelsEXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE JOINT LINE STRIP OF FOUR OF THE 1916 3-CENT COIL, SCOTT 456, IN THE DISTINCTIVE RED VIOLET SHADE.
Joint line multiples of Scott 456 are rare. This strip of four in the brighter Red Violet shade is the first we have encountered.
