Menay" at top right, Jan. 13, 1859 docketingVERY FINE. AN IMMACULATE AND COLORFUL USAGE OF TWO DENOMINATIONS OF THE FIRST ISSUE OF ARGENTINA.

BAVARIA, 1849, 1kr Deep Black, Plate I (1a; Michel 1 Ib). Large and even margins all around, intense shade, tied by three strikes of indistinct tombstone cancels on folded printed circular from Kenmath to Obergunzburg, sealed tear on bottom flap mentioned only for 100% accuracyVERY FINE AND CHOICE. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE EXAMPLE OF THE BAVARIA 1849 ONE-KREUZER USED ON A PRINTED CIRCULAR.
Bavaria was the first German state to issue its own postage stamps. The 1kr was used primarily for local mail and also for use on printed matter such as this circular.
Signed Bloch. Scott Retail as cancelled by both pen and postmarks -- this should be considered far more desirable as there are no pen cancels.

Large margins to just in, tied by large five-bar grid, matching "Bergedorf 23 8" circular datestamp on buff cover to Hamburg, 1866 receiving backstamp, minor cover wearFRESH AND FINE. AN ATTRACTIVE COVER BEARING A SINGLE OF THE BERGEDORF HALF-SCHILLING BLACK ON PALE BLUE PAPER.

Horizontal pair, large margins to full, tied by targets, red "Montreal JU 24, 1852" circular datestamp on light blue cover to Walpole N.H., red "Canada" in arcVERY FINE. AN ATTRACTIVE USAGE OF A PAIR OF THE CANADA 3-PENCE ORANGE VERMILION SHADE ON A COVER TO THE UNITED STATES.

CRETE, 1898, 20pa Violet (1; SG B1). Large to huge margins, control perf "28", tied by purple Union Jack with "Temenos" handstamp on blue cover addressed to "Rear Admiral Sir G. Noel KCMG, RN, HMS 'Revenge', Kandia", some minor edgewearVERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE USE OF THE FIRST ISSUE OF CRETE UNDER THE BRITISH SPHERE OF ADMINISTRATION. NON-PHILATELIC USAGES ARE EXTREMELY RARE.
Covers are known which are philatelic and were sent home as souvenirs. However, the control perforation "28" was used for letters sent by the high officials and military and naval authorities concerned with the short-lived administration.
The purple handstamp used on this cover had previously been used as a provisional marking with date and value inserted. There is no date on this cover as a datestamp was issued at the time of the stamp's use. We can partly date the cover by the Admiral's movements -- he arrived on the Revenge on September 12, 1898 to supervise Turkish disarmament and surrender, and he left on December 27 after completing his task.

Large margins all around, deep shade on bright paper, tied by red "PD" in circle, red "A Gambia Au 18 69" circular datestamp on small cover to Mangiet, France, blue "Victor Barrere, Bathurst, Riviere Gambie, Cote Occidentale D'Afrique" oval handstamp, red London Paid circular datestamp and matching "PD" in circle tying stamp, red "8" crayon, Calais transit circular datestamp and French receiving backstampsVERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE USAGE OF THE FIRST ISSUE OF GAMBIA. A MARVELOUS SHOWPIECE.

GREAT BRITAIN, 1840, 2p Pale Blue (2; SG 5 or SG D1(3)vh). Plate 1, large margins to full, pretty shade which is nicely complemented by well-struck red Wotton-under-Edge Maltese Cross cancelVERY FINE AND CHOICE. THIS DISTINCTIVE RED MALTESE CROSS CANCELLATION FROM WOTTON-UNDER-EDGE IS EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE, ESPECIALLY ON SUCH A PRETTY STAMP.
The Maltese Cross cancels were all made by hand, and so there tends to be some variations. Some are distinctly different from what one normally sees -- this particular Maltese Cross cancellation is easily identifiable, because the outer lines have gaps.

GREAT BRITAIN, 1840, 2p Deep Blue (2; SG 4). Block of four from Plate 1, IE-IF/JE-JF, full margins to clear, bold black Maltese Cross cancels, top right stamp light diagonal creaseVERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE BLOCK OF FOUR OF THE GREAT BRITAIN 2-PENCE BLUE IN THE DEEP BLUE SHADE.
Blocks of this issue should be considered rare.
