The high-denomination 1894 Unwatermarked Bureau issues are extremely rare and often plagued with poor centering and faults. This is one of the finest we have offered.

Our census of PR97, available at https://siegelauctions.com/census/us/scott/PR97 , contains ten unused examples, all with original gum, including one in the Miller collection owned by The New York Public Library. None are known used. Three are only known from old black and white photos. None are sound -- most have thin spots or creases. Six have perfs touching the design on at least one side. The example offered here is one of the best-centered examples.

Of the unused examples available to collectors, only three are confirmed as sound. The three sound copies include one straight edge at top, and all three have perfs in on one side. Centering on examples with faults also tends to be poor.

Only three are confirmed as sound (one other needs to reexamined for condition). Seven have gum or part gum. The example offered here has the best centering of the three sound copies, all of which have gum.

Of these, only six have original gum. Three original-gum examples have faults, including a repair, reperfing and thins. Only three original-gum stamps are sound -- the ex-Inman copy, one offered in our 1990 Rarities sale, and the example offered here. Four stamps without gum are also sound, but one has a straight edge.
