Type 7, enormous margins including left sheet margin, neat three-line manuscript cancel, used on fresh local cover, backflap partly torn away and top left corner of cover nicked, really insignificant considering the otherwise pristine condition of the envelope and the superb quality of the stamp, which is Extremely Fine, ex Hessel and Golden

Sale 1232, Lot 1660, CarriersBaltimore Md., 1c Dark Green (1LB4). Type 7, margins touching except at bottom, cancelled by manuscript cross strokes (not tied), properly used with 3c Brownish Carmine, Ty. II (11A), mostly ample margins, tied by grid cancels, "Baltimore Md. Jun. 19" (1852) circular datestamp on blue folded letter to New York City, Fine and rare combination, also an early use of the Green stamp -- Denwood Kelly speculates that the Red and Green were issued first (in 1851), followed by the Blue in 1853, but a supply of Green stamps remained on hand and was placed into circulation in later years (dated covers seem to follow this pattern) -- ex Hessel and Golden

Sale 1232, Lot 1669, CarriersWilliams' City Post, Cincinnati O., 2c Brown (9LB1). Three full to large margins, just touched at bottom right, straight horizontal tear in upper part of stamp, appears to be tied by manuscript lines on brown cover to Maj. H. Schley but the accompanying P.F. certificate states stamp did not originate, but we disagree, manuscript "2 cts" at upper right, Fine appearance and rare either on or off cover (if this is removed from the count of covers, only five are recorded), ex Golden, signed Sloane, with 2000 P.F. certificate as described above, Scott value for an off-cover stamp $4,000.00

Sale 1232, Lot 1670, CarriersU.S. City Despatch Post, New York N.Y., 3c Black on Blue Green Glazed, Double Impression (6LB5a). Full to large margins, very distinct and misaligned second impression is clearly a double impression, but accompanying P.F. certificate calls it a "kiss" impression, which we think is profoundly wrong, red "U.S." in frame cancels stamp, matching "U.S. City Despatch Post Oct. 25, 1 O'Clock" Type II circular datestamp on ca. 1843 cover front only, certificate also states (incorrectly, in our opinion) this did not originate on the front, but the impression of the cancel ties thru the paper, used from Rochester N.Y. to a street address, Very Fine stamp with a true double impression, ex Middendorf and Golden, accompanied by the 2000 P.F. certificate which we think got just about everything wrong -- as Clemenza would say, "Leave the certificate, take the item"

Sale 1232, Lot 1676, CarriersU.S.P.O., Philadelphia Pa., 1c Black on Yellow Glazed (7LB9). Large margins at top and left, traces of other two framelines, slightly oxidized, used with 3c Orange Brown, Ty. I (10), clear to large margins except in at top, bright color, tied by blue "Philadelphia Pa. Sep. 18" circular datestamp on brown cover to Brownsville Pa., small edge tear at left, part of backflap removed, Very Fine, this is the only recorded 7LB9 cover used in combination with the 3c 1851 Issue -- the postmark date (Sep. 18, 1851) is about four months later than the typical period of use of the 7LB1-7LB9 carrier stamps; however, the stamps were never declared invalid, and the new Franklin and Eagle official carrier stamps did not arrive until October-November 1851; therefore, it is possible for this to be a genuine use, although the accompanying 1980 P.F. certificate declines opinion as to whether the stamp originated on this cover -- ex Golden.
