South Hanson Mass. Locomotive. Perfect strike of this fancy cancel on 3c Red on Blue War Dept. cut square (UO54), 60 x 52mm, with half of "South Hanson Mass. Apr. 1" circular datestamp at leftEXTREMELY FINE EXAMPLE OF THIS MAJOR CANCELLATION RARITY. ONLY THREE COMPLETE STRIKES OF THIS MARKING ARE KNOWN. ONE OF THE MOST ELABORATE FANCY CANCELLATIONS WE HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED.
Only one is known on a full cover (also a 3c War Dept. entire). Only the cover and this example shows the town datestamp. Acquired by Dr. Lobdell in our Sale 742 (May 12, 1992) and offered to the market for the first time in 18 years.

War Department Postal Stationery. More than 150 entires and a handful of cut squares, two 3c entires from Headquarters of William Tecumseh Sherman, one addressed by Sherman to his wife and another addressed by his wife to his son, bulk of the collection consists of a vast range of Signal Officer usages, incl. one each from Canada and Belgium bearing stamps from those countries, territorial usages with a 15c Dark Red on White (UO27), Nos. UO51 and UO55 with A.P.S. certificates as earliest documented uses, railroad postmarks, postmaster and county postmarks, transition to penalty envelopes, late uses, etc., overall condition Fine-Very Fine, with much useful material
