HAWAII, 1886, 2c Rose Vermilion, Bisect (31b). Top right diagonal half used with 1866 5c Blue (32) and tied by corks, used in combination with U.S. 10c Brown (150), defective, tied by red "G.P.O. Honolulu Paid All Mar. 2" double-circle datestamp and quartered cork cancel on front only (with restored back) to Richfield, British Columbia, magenta "San Francisco Cal. Paid Mar. 17" circular datestamp, endorsed "pr. Str. Moses Taylor" at top left, an unusual mixed franking which is believed to be unique with the 10c Bank Note stamp--in July 1870 the single-letter rate to the United States was reduced from 15c to 6c, the 6c stamps were not available until late Spring 1871, and so the rate was made up using three 2c stamps, as the supply of 2c stamps dwindled, the post office permitted bisects to be used with 5c stamps for the 6c rate--the cover offered here is a late use of the bisect, which must have been sent in 1871 (the U.S. 10c stamp was not available until April 1870 when it was issued in Washington D.C, ex Dale-Lichtenstein, accompanied by note from philatelist Henry C. Hitt describing the sequence of when the stamps were issued
