A RARE UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE FRANKLIN CARRIER WITH TRACES OF ORIGINAL GUM.

(Honour's) City Post, Charleston S.C., 2c Black (4LB3). Three huge margins, full at bottom, tied by manuscript "H", blue "Charleston S.C. 5 cts. 7 Oct." (ca. 1854) integral-rate circular datestamp on blue cover to Flintsville S.C., a few minor bleached spots touch stamp, otherwise Very Fine, extremely rare with Honour's "H" cancel, ex Hessel, Golden and Stimmell, with 2000 P.F. certificate
Charleston S.C. Carriers (4LB7/4LB21). Six used stamps, including Nos. 4LB7, 4LB8, 4LB11, 4LB14, 4LB20 and 4LB21, the first four used with manuscript cancels, last two unused with original gum, a few small flaws but each are attractive examples, Fine or Fine appearing group, No. 4LB7 with 2012 P.F. certificate
Steinmeyer's City Post, Charleston S.C., 2c Black on Bluish (4LB19). Position 10 with bottom right corner sheet margins and large margins all around, original gum, couple small gum soaks as usual, pinhole in border, certificate describes gum as redistributed over a thin in margin (we disagree)EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. ONE OF THE FINEST OF FIVE OR SIX KNOWN EXAMPLES OF THIS RARITY.

Cancelled by orange-red "U.S. City Despatch Post Feb. 15, 9 O'Clock" Type I double-line circular datestamp with part of U.S. visible at bottom, large margins, small thin spot, Extremely Fine appearance, very rare, only one cover is recorded with the circular datestamp tying the stamp, perhaps two or three off-cover stamps exist cancelled in this manner, ex Middendorf and Golden

Unused (no gum), full to large margins, slight thin spot as usual, Very Fine appearance and rare with only approximately ten recorded, we have tracked sales of the Rosy Buff paper for more than 20 years and have seen only one without thins, ex Middendorf, with 1981 P.F. certificate
U.S. City Despatch Post, New York N.Y., 3c Black on Light Blue Unsurfaced (6LB3). Position 23R, large margins, tied by red "U.S. City Despatch Post Feb. 16, -- O'Clock" Type I double-line circular datestamp on piece, Extremely Fine, ex Caspary and Hall
5c Brown (1). Margins all around, late printing with poor impression, tied by red square grid, used with U.S. Mail, New York N.Y., 1c Black on Buff Glazed (6LB11), clear to ample margins, slightly oxidized, small manuscript cancel and tied by red "New-York Jul. 2" circular datestamp on small brown cover to Philadelphia, minor wear and tiny edge tears, still Fine, extremely rare tied in this manner, ex Kuphal, Scott Retail as not tied
Philadelphia Pa. Carriers (7LB1/7LB13). Seven stamps, including Nos. 7LB1, 7LB3, 7LB8 and 7LB11-7LB13, mostly unused including 7LB1 and 7LB13, a few small flaws but overall Fine group
Philadelphia Pa. Carriers, Cover Balance (7LB4/7LB8). Three full covers and one front, including Nos. 7LB4 (front only), 7LB6 (with sheet margin), 7LB7 and 7LB8, a couple minor stamp wrinkles, Fine and very attractive, a scarce group, three P.F. certificates accompany
U.S.P.O., Philadelphia Pa., 1c Black on Yellow Glazed (7LB9). Large bottom margin, frameline at right and traces on other sides, slight oxidation, uncancelled on folded cover to local street address, faint blue Philadelphia circular datestamp and "2" in circle drop-rate marking, slightly worn, file fold and small tear at bottom, Very Fine appearance, a rare stamp that appears to have been used on this folded letter with "2" drop-rate marking, this is one of approximately 18 reported Yellow 7LB9 carrier stamps on cover, there is a "W.H.C." backstamp on the inside behind the stamp, which indicates Warren H. Colson considered the use genuine, but we must offer it on its own merits, ex Hall, Stimmell and from our Sale 285 (Mar. 31, 1965), which featured the Philip H. Ward Carriers and Locals collection, Scott value for 7LB9 uncancelled off cover
U.S. Penny Post, St. Louis Mo., 2c Black, Type II (8LB2). Unused (no gum), usual close margins to in at left but large at bottom with portion of adjoining stamp, sharp impressionFINE AND RARE. ONE OF NINE RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE ST. LOUIS 2-CENT BLACK TYPE II CARRIER STAMP.
Scott began classifying the St. Louis 2c Black Types I and II as 8LB1 and 8LB2 approximately 10 years ago (they were previously listed together under 8LB1). Our census of this rare carrier issue contains 11 unused and 3 used stamps (none is known on cover) of both types. Nine of the stamps in our census are Type II. This is the first example of either type we have offered since 2006.
