Apr. 3" circular datestamp on cover to Antigonish, Nova Scotia with "We fight it out on this line!" Grant campaign design (Milgram UG-21), Antigonish backstamp, some minor soiling, stamps with small perf flaws from placement near edge, cover missing backflap and small edge tear at top left, still Fine and desirable design, very rare used to another country

Sale 1232, Lot 1629, 1868 Grilled Issue thru 1869 Pictorial Issue1c Buff (112). Perfs trimmed at top and right, tied by quartered cork and "Greensboro Ala. Dec. 24" duplex datestamp on American Tontine Life and Savings Insurance Company printed pamphlet, no address but presumably delivered locally, the Greensboro agents are listed on back, Very Fine, although insurance companies were large bulk mailers, surviving examples of their booklets sent by third-class mail are scarce, this 1c 1869 usage is rare, ex Juhring, Cipolla and Coulter (who was an insurance man himself and greatly prized this 1869 use)

Tied by target cancel, used with 2c Black, F Grill (93), similarly tied on cover locally addressed to Grinnell Iowa and forwarded to North Danville Vt., light strike of "Grinnell Ioa. Jul. ?" circular datestamp, minor edge soiling, slightly reduced at left, Very Fine, this was mailed with the 1c stamp for local delivery in Grinnell and then the 2c was added to make up the 3c domestic rate for forwarding to North Danville, ex Krug and Eubanks, 1960, 1980 and 2003 P.F. certificates no longer accompany

Fe 11 1870" receiving backstamp, back of cover with similar illustration to the front -- depicting a cherub carrying a letter

VERY FINE COVER DESPITE THE STAMP FAULT. A RARE USE OF THE ONE-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE ON A 2-CENT FERRIAGE RATE COVER TO CANADA. PARTICULARLY DESIRABLE WITH THE VALENTINE ILLUSTRATIONS.

The 2c ferriage rate was applied to mail between U.S. and Canadian post offices located along the same contiguous border. Ex Coulter
