$1.00 Candle Holder, Brown (Engraved) Color Inverted (1610c). Mint N.H., deep rich colorsVERY FINE MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THIS POPULAR MODERN ERROR -- THE C.I.A. INVERT.
Popularly called the "C.I.A. Invert", a single pane of 100 stamps was purchased at the McLean Va. Post Office by employees of the C.I.A., for use on mail from the agency. They noticed the error, pooled together funds to buy a replacement sheet and kept the pane for themselves. When it was discovered who had purchased the stamps, a scandal ensued over who actually owned the stamps. Of the pane of 100, only 93 sound examples reached collectors.

Mint N.H., Very Fine, a rare and striking color-omitted error, only twenty are recorded according to Datz, accompanied by a block of nine with progressive diminution of the Dark Blue, containing one stamp that nearly qualifies as the Scott listed 2204c error (Dark Blue omitted), but with faint traces of the color present (see Sale 989, lot 196 for the adjoining multiple to this block, which does contain the 2204c error), Scott value for only No. 2204b

Freaks and Varieties Study. More than 50 20th Century items on stock pages, mostly blocks including many larger multiples, most are dramatic misperfs with many but not all caused by foldovers, these are concentrated in the Washington-Franklin issues, also includes a cracked plate, a nice range of over and under-inking varieties, some quite dramatic, as well as one actual listed error, No. 554 in a misperfed block containing three pairs of the error (P.F. certificate, Scott value $750.00), finally a group of coils so dramatically misperfed that the stamp contains only half the design (or halves of two designs), overall a fascinating and highly collectible group for the error specialist, see our website PDF for a complete scan
