1c Blue, Ty. II (7). Position 2L4, full to huge margins incl. top sheet margin, wonderful Plate 4 color and impression, virtually face-free circular datestamp in top right cornerEXTREMELY FINE. A SUPERB EXAMPLE OF AN 1851 ONE-CENT IMPERFORATE TYPE II FROM PLATE 4.
Plate 4 Type II stamps are desirable and only come from the top row where they show full ornaments at top, mirroring the bottom row where the rare Type Ia stamps have full plumes at bottom. Position 2L4 has a small break in the bottom curved line, which technically qualifies it as a Type IIIa, but because of the complete top ornaments, it is considered to be a Type II. This is yet another inconsistency in how top-row Plate 4 stamps are treated in the Scott Catalogue, but specialists are well aware of their special nature.
