FINE APPEARING EXAMPLE OF THE RARE ATHERTON SHIFT, THE MOST PRONOUNCED OF THE BLACK JACK DOUBLE TRANSFERS.

Concerning this double transfer, Ashbrook wrote: "Here we have one of the most remarkable double transfers on U. S. stamps that I have ever seen. I have for years classed the One Cent 1851, Type II, 89R2, as the No. 1 among remarkable examples of this variety and in my opinion this 2c Black Jack could well rank as No. 2. Perhaps some would even rank it equal to the 1c..."

Sale 1285, Lot 2042, 1861-68 IssuesNational Bank Note Co., 3c Rose, All-Over Grill Essay, Points Down (79-E15a var). The so-called "Biscuit Grill", bold strike of New York City Segmented Diamond Within Circle cancellation, known used in July 1867 and evidently applied to a number of experimental grills to test the efficacy of grilling, small crease, still Fine and rare, only approximately 12-15 examples are known, this trial cancel and its use on both regular mail and the grill essays was the subject of an article in Chronicle 134 by Scott Trepel (accompanies), with 2001 P.F. certificate
