1c Blue, Ty. III (8). Plate 4, deep rich color on bright paper, detailed impression, large margins all around which show the clear breaks in outer lines at top and bottom, light town cancelEXTREMELY FINE GEM. A BEAUTIFUL USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1851 IMPERFORATE ONE-CENT TYPE III FROM PLATE FOUR.
Type III is defined as having breaks in the outer lines at both top and bottom. Many Type III stamps have breaks that were created or enlarged by plate wear. Since the wear occurred over a period of time, the majority of stamps of this type (both unused and used) have small breaks in at least one line.
With 2015 P.S.E. certificate (XF 90; SMQ $6,000.00)
3c Dull Red, Ty. II, Waterbury Conn. Unofficial Roulettes (11A var). Position 56R1L noted on back, clear roulettes with portion of adjoining stamp at bottom, "Waterbury Ct. Oct. 5" circular datestamp cancel, Fine and rare, fewer than ten off-cover examples are recorded, in an article on this issue in the Sesquicentennial book (pp. 144-148), Wilson Hulme dates the device, based on shade and plate, to 1854, all are from Plate 1 Late, the roulette is spread far apart, leaving wide areas of the stamp still connected, see Siegel sale of the Wilson Hulme collection (Sale 964, Lot 206)
5c Red Brown, Defective Transfer (12). Position 23R1, margins to just clear at top and right, deep rich color, Fine, an exceedingly scarce position and one of only two constant varieties that occur on the 5c Plate 1, with 1984 P.F. certificate
10c Green, Ty. I (13). Unused (no gum), large even margins all around, deep rich color and proof-like impressionEXTREMELY FINE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE SUPERB UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE 1855 10-CENT TYPE I IMPERFORATE.
This scarce stamp is extremely desirable because the defining characteristic of the type -- the full bottom right shell -- is fully visible within the large bottom margin. Type I stamps come from the bottom 20 positions of the plate. They are the only stamps to show the design complete at bottom. For some reason the sheet margin at bottom was often trimmed away, leaving a dearth of quality copies. The Type IV stamps come from only eight positions, but we would rank the two types equally in terms of the rarity of sound four-margin copies.
