Very few examples of the $50.00 Series 1940 stamp are known. It is extremely difficult to obtain in any condition, much less the superb condition offered here.

A Power Search review found six others, including three with either cut or punched cancels, two with manuscript and one with both manuscript and handstamp cancels (margin trimmed). This is the only example located with Power Search cancelled solely by a handstamp. A review of other major name sales also failed to find any others cancelled solely by a handstamp.

Ex DePriest. With 2003 P.F. certificate. Scott Catalogue lists but does not price this issue in unused condition. It is probably comparable in rarity to, or rarer than, Scott R357 (two located with Power Search), which catalogues $5,000.00

This issue, when it is found at all, normally comes with either cut cancels or perfins, or will have staple holes. The example offered here, with none of those detractions, is a true condition rarity.

We have offered only seven others since keeping computerized records, including four with perf cancels, one with manuscript only, one with both manuscript and handstamp and only one other cancelled solely by a handstamp.
