5c Red Brown (1). Huge margins all around including part of adjoining stamp at top and significant portion of adjoining stamp at right, brilliant color nicely complemented by red New York square grid cancelEXTREMELY FINE GEM. A MAGNIFICENT USED EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT 1847 ISSUE, WHICH HAS BEEN GRADED SUPERB 98 BY P.S.E.
With 2006 P.S.E. certificate (Superb 98; SMQ $3,900.00). This is one of only four to have been awarded this grade with just four higher.
5c Red Brown, Recut Left Frameline (1 var). Position 1L1, large to huge margins all around, neat red grid cancel, recut left frameline shows dark and clearEXTREMELY FINE GEM. ONE OF THE FINEST EXAMPLES OF THIS RARE 5-CENT 1847 PLATE VARIETY WE HAVE ENCOUNTERED.
The famed Wagshal collection contained more of the recut frameline and broken frameline varieties than any other collection we have encountered. Wagshal's finest example, offered in our Sale 993, is the only one we have seen that compares favorably to the stamp offered here.
With 2015 P.F. certificate confirming the variety, stating Position 1L and additionally stating "showing a slip of the engraver's tool at upper left." With 2012 P.S.E. certificate not mentioning the variety (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $1,350.00 as normal, unpriced as the recut frameline). This variety is now listed in Scott at a value of 2.8-times the normal stamp. Extrapolating from the SMQ value for the normal stamp, this might be valued at $3,500.00 or more
5c Reddish Brown (1 var). Large margins all around, deep rich color identified on accompanying certificate as "in the family of Ridgway's Dark Russet," intense impression on bright paper which retains its original bluing, deep red grid cancel complements the shade, Extremely Fine Gem, a rare color shade and especially so in such superb condition, ex Hoffner and Dr. Hinrichs, with 1998 P.F. certificate
5c Red Brown (1). Large to huge margins, pretty shade, sharp impression on crisp paper, red grid cancel, Extremely Fine Gem, with 2011 P.S.E. certificate (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $1,350.00)
5c Dark Brown (1a). Large even margins, strong shade with well-incised impression, face-free red grid cancel, Extremely Fine Gem, with 1983 P.F. certificate
5c Red Brown (1). Large balanced margins all around, two well-struck large red numeral "5" cancels, bold impression on fresh paper, Extremely Fine Gem, a superb used example complemented by a scarce cancel, ex Mayer, Rose and Dr. Hinrichs, with 1999 P.F. certificate as Orange Brown
5c Blackish Brown (1a var). Huge to large margins all around, intense dark color and proof-like impression, light red grid cancel, Extremely Fine Gem, a particularly scarce shade, ex "Liberty," with 2004 P.F. and 2005 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $2,150.00 as Dark Brown), only four examples of Dark Brown grade higher
5c Dark Brown (1a). Huge to large margins including sheet margin at right, especially deep shade, well-struck blue grid cancel, Extremely Fine, with 2000 P.S.E. (as Blackish Brown) and 2000 P.F. certificates
5c Dark Red Brown (1). Large balanced margins, deep rich shade which we feel is a First Printing Dark Brown, strong impression, lightly struck red grid cancel, Extremely Fine Gem, with 1997 P.F. certificate
5c Red Brown (1). Large to huge margins including right sheet margin, pretty pale shade, neat strike of red New York square grid cancel, Extremely Fine Gem, with 1991 P.F. and 2012 P.S.E. certificates (XF 90; SMQ $675.00)

5c Dark Red Brown (1). Large balanced margins, remarkable and intense shade from First Printing (per Wade Saadi), proof-like impression, light strike of red grid cancel, Very Fine and choice, ex Granzow, with 1986 P.F. certificate

5c Red Brown (1). Margins to just in, two dramatic pre-printing paper folds, cancelled by red Hudson River Mail 17-bar grid in circle, Fine and striking stamp, Scott Retail as normal red cancel
5c Red Brown (1). Horizontal pair, ample to clear margins and just touched at bottom right, red cork cancels, Fine, with 2010 P.S.A.G. and 2015 P.F. certificates
5c Red Brown (1). Five singles, one Brown, margins to in on one side, a couple minor flaws including one with a vertical crease, Fine appearing group
5c Orange Brown (1b). Large to huge margins all around, lovely color complemented by red grid cancelEXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT 1847 ISSUE IN THE ORANGE BROWN SHADE, WHICH HAS BEEN GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E. THIS IS THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED.
With 2007 P.S.E. certificate (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $3,800.00). This is the highest grade awarded to an Orange Brown stamp in the P.S.E. Population Report.
5c Orange Brown (1b). Huge margins all around, brilliant color nicely contrasted by blue Philadelphia circular datestamp, Extremely Fine Gem, with 1977 P.F. certificate
5c Red Orange (1c). Trace of original gum, nearly three margins (partially touches at left), cut in at right, tiny corner crease bottom right, a very rare shade in unused condition, with 1996 P.S.E. (does not mention the trivial corner crease) and 2002 P.F. certificates, Scott Retail as unused (no gum)
5c Brown Orange (1d). Huge to full margins, gorgeous distinctive color, red grid cancel, Extremely Fine, with 2011 P.S.A.G. and 2015 P.S.E. certificates (VF-XF 85; SMQ $1,800.00), only three examples grade higher
5c Brown Orange (1d). Large margins, rich distinctive color, unobtrusive black grid cancel, Extremely Fine, a scarce shade and especially so with the grid cancel in black, ex Dr. Hinrichs, with 1999 P.F. certificate
10c Black (2). Position 89R1, Jumbo margins all around including small parts of adjoining stamps at top, left and right, crisp shade and proof-like impression, beautifully complemented by bold red grid cancelsEXTREMELY FINE GEM.
