$5.00 Dark Green (313). Deep rich color and detailed impression, well-proportioned margins, bold oval registry cancelEXTREMELY FINE. A WONDERFUL USED $5.00 1902 ISSUE WITH SUPERB CENTERING AND WIDE EVEN MARGINS.
We submitted this stamp on behalf of the consignor with every expectation of an XF-Superb 95 grade. Imagine our shock when P.S.E. came back with a VF 80 grade. The perfs are fully formed and the stamp is flawless, so the only possible justification for the low grade is the cancel. However, dollar-value 1902's typically have double-oval cancels, and this strike is actually quite neat, leaving most of the design unobscured. The stamp is a Gem, and the accompanying 2007 P.S.E. certificate is worth keeping as a conversation piece.
