The "Scinde Dawk" name is simply because they were used in the Sindh Province and the word "Dawk" is an anglicized spelling of the Hindustani word for "Post". The -1/2a Red Scinde Dawk was the first stamp issued in all of Asia. Because it was embossed on a wax wafer it had a tendency to crack (and often disintegrate). It was deemed unacceptable and quickly replaced with the white and blue stamps embossed on paper.

A former owner of this example was Sir Alexander Gordon Cardew (1861-1937). He served as the Acting Governor of Madras in 1919 and held various other government positions in Madras from 1885.
