30c Black, H. Grill (143). Unused (traces of original gum), intense shade, several clear vertical rows of grill pointsFINE AND RARE UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE 1870 30-CENT NATIONAL BANK NOTE GRILLED ISSUE. ESPECIALLY SCARCE IN SOUND CONDITION.
The 30c National Grilled issue is one of the couple most difficult denominations to obtain in sound and unused condition. The centering on the example here typifies how this issue is normally found, but a review of our computerized records found that only a small potion of those we have offered were sound.

30c Black, H. Grill (143). Intense shade and impression, clearly-defined grill, bold blue quartered cork cancel, small picked-out inclusion not noted on certificates, still Very Fine, an attractive stamp with a strong grill and a colored cancel, with 1981 and 2001 P.F. certificates
30c Black, H. Grill (143). Clear grill points, cancelled by red New York Foreign Mail Star cancel (Weiss ST-8P1), a blurry but identifiable strike, small faults including reperfed at bottom, Fine appearing and scarce 30c Grill with a red NYFM cancel, with 1998 P.S.E. certificate

With 1975 P.F. certificate. Scott value for original gum is $25,000.00. Scott value without gum

Original gum, lightly hinged, clearly-defined grill, intense shade, reperfed at left and most recent certificate notes "tiny gum spots opposite Perry's eye" (they are indeed tiny)FINE APPEARING AND RARE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1870 90-CENT NATIONAL BANK NOTE GRILLED ISSUE.
Considering original-gum examples only, after the extremely rare 12c and 30c and non-existent 24c, the 90c is the rarest of the 1870 National Grilled Issue.

1c Ultramarine, I. Grill (134A). Original gum, strong grill, brilliant color, fresh and Very Fine, with 1986 P.F. certificate not specifying the grill type
2c Red Brown, I. Grill (135A). Unused (no gum), clearly-defined grill, fresh and Fine, with 2015 Weiss certificate, Scott value as with gum
10c Brown, I. Grill (139A). Early state I Grill points, wide balanced margins, rich color, light strike of cork cancel, most recent certificate notes reperfed at rightEXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. THE 10-CENT I GRILL IS ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL UNITED STATES STAMPS. ONLY TWELVE USED AND THREE UNUSED EXAMPLES HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED.
Starting with the 2013 Scott U.S. Specialized Catalogue, the I Grills were elevated to major catalogue number status. Collectors will now have to acquire these I Grills if they desire completeness.
Ronald A. Burns, the foremost authority on the Bank Note grills, records ten used and three unused examples of the 10c I Grill, plus an additional two used on the same cover.
