War Department Plate Varieties. Five different, four are 3c values and incl. scratched plate (unused, original gum), "pale 3" (no shading at bottom of numeral 3), "smashed plate", plate flaw from the right pane (pos. 11), the other is a 15c value with listed short transfer (pos. 74), also 6c with diagonal pre-print paper fold, generally Fine and a difficult lot to duplicate, the War Department plate varieties, including some included in this lot were recently described by George Sayers with credit to David H. Lobdell in Chroncle 228 (pp. 355-357), where he states that plate varieties are fewer and more difficult to detect on War Dept. stamps than on other departmentals
