12c Black, Plate 1 (36). Block of four, detailed impression, central strike of red "Hartford Ct. (or O?) Mar. 9" circular datestamp cancel, few minor perf separations sensibly reinforced, bottom right stamp two small toned spots, Very Fine appearance, blocks of the 12c 1857 from Plate 1 are almost always cancelled in black, we have not seen a cover with this the particular red "Hartford" circular datestamp, but there is another 12c block with the same datestamp (Sale 839, lot 460), which originally formed a block of eight with the block offered here, ex Lehman and Ishikawa, with clear 1977 P.F. certificate, offered "as is"

A BEAUTIFUL USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1860 12-CENT FROM PLATE 3, CANCELLED BY AN ULTRAMARINE FRENCH TRANSIT HANDSTAMP AND ALSO BY RED GRID AND "P.D." HANDSTAMPS.
With 2009 P.F. certificate. An Ultramarine cancel is unlisted in Scott.
