Mar. 31" double-circle datestamp on 1861 red and blue 7-Star Confederate Flag Patriotic cover (F7-2B) with Saunders, Clark & Jones imprint, to Rochester N.Y., manuscript "Confederated States of America" at top, some slight edgewearVERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE USE OF A CONFEDERATE STATES 7-STAR PATRIOTIC COVER PRIOR TO THE START OF THE WAR, SENT FROM ONE PRO-UNION NORTHERN CITY TO ANOTHER.

Jun. ? 1861" circular datestamp at top of "Jeff. Davis, Prest./Alexr. H. Stephens, Vice Prest." 7-Star Confederate Flag Patriotic cover (F7-1B, smaller lettering) to Paymaster John V. B Bleecker, U.S. Navy Yard, Portsmouth N.H., sealed tear at top left of cover, bottom stamp in pair with small tearsVERY FINE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE USE OF UNITED STATES STAMPS ON A JEFFERSON DAVIS-ALEXANDER STEPHENS CONFEDERATE FLAG PATRIOTIC COVER, MAILED IN THE NORTH SHORTLY AFTER THE SEVERING OF POSTAL RELATIONS.
The 7-Star flag was the official Confederate national flag from March 4, 1861, until the admission of Virginia on May 7, 1861. The white lettering on this cover is slightly thinner and smaller than that on the cover offered in lot 479. The penmanship closely matches that on a Confederate cover to Commander Catesby ap R. Jones, of Monitor and Merrimack fame (Siegel Sale 840, lot 401). This was likely sent by the same person.

A CHOICE AND RARE USE OF A UNITED STATES STAMP ON A JEFFERSON DAVIS-ALEXANDER STEPHENS CONFEDERATE FLAG PATRIOTIC COVER, MAILED IN THE NORTH FIVE DAYS AFTER THE WAR BEGAN AT FORT SUMTER.

Free Trade With the World!" propaganda design (PS-1), missing top flap, minor soiling barely affects stampsVERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE POLITICAL SLOGAN DESIGN. THIS IS ONE OF THE RAREST CONFEDERATE PATRIOTICS.
Throughout the war the Confederate government hoped to use international commerce to raise hard money and influence other nations to support the Southern cause. This rare slogan design promotes that effort. More effective, however, was the Federal blockade that isolated the Confederate States and disrupted regular trade routes.

Jul. 4, 1861" circular datestamp on red and blue 11-Star Confederate Flag Patriotic cover (F11-1) to Gilmer Ga., with matching design on letterhead datelined Atlanta July 3 from a soldier to his sweetheart back home, some commentary about soldiers marching and much about missing home and especially his friends, small piece of flap missing and tiny opening nick at top, the small cover and matching letterhead go perfectly together on an exhibit pageVERY FINE. FEWER THAN A DOZEN PATRIOTIC COVERS ARE KNOWN WITH THE ATLANTA PROVISIONAL HANDSTAMP. THE COVER OFFERED HERE -- DATED ON JULY 4 WITH A MATCHING LETTERHEAD AND SOLDER'S LETTER -- IS AN OUTSTANDING EXAMPLE.

Position 38, large margins to touching, minor gum stains in margins, tied by "Wilmington N.C. 5 Paid 28 Jan." circular datestamp on yellow cover with red Cannon & 12-Star Confederate Flag and Verse Patriotic design (CN-1C var, variation in smoke), small edge nick at lower leftVERY FINE. A COLORFUL PATRIOTIC USAGE OF THE FIRST GENERAL ISSUE.

10c Dark Blue, Hoyer & Ludwig (2b). Mostly large margins, tied by "Midlothian Va. Feb. ?" circular datestamp on small cover to Sugar Hill Ga. with red and blue "Camp McDonald", 11-Star Confederate Flag and Tent Patriotic design (TF-1), stamp with tear at center, cover with small tear at leftVERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE CONFEDERATE PATRIOTIC DESIGN AND ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE WITH THE 10-CENT BLUE HOYER & LUDWIG LITHOGRAPH.
Camp McDonald was located in Big Shanty (Kennesaw) Ga. and was the training site for thousands of soldiers, primarily from Phillips' Georgia Legion.

5c Light Blue, De La Rue (6). Two singles, somewhat irregular separation but intact, right stamp creases, tied by bold "Richmond Va. Jun. 24, 1862" circular datestamp on small neat cover with red and blue 9-Star Confederate Flag Patriotic design (F9-2B), addressed to Atlanta Ga., lightly cleaned to remove soilingVERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE 9-STAR CONFEDERATE FLAG PATRIOTIC DESIGN.
The ninth star represents the admission of Arkansas, which was followed only three days later by North Carolina. Due to the short time period there were fewer 9-Star Confederate Patriotic designs produced than any other flag designs (7 thru 13 stars). They are extremely rare.

Aug. 6, 1863" circular datestamp on red and blue "Lincoln" surrounded by Flags and Eagle captured Union Patriotic cover to Pamplin's Depot Va., soldier's endorsement at left, top flap expertly added (the paper mesh matches exactly and if we did not know this cover's history, we would not have detected it)EXTREMELY FINE.
