III (26), stamps tied by Baltimore circular datestamps, blue and rimless black respectively, first with additional pencil cancel, second with 3c stamp affixed over the carrier stamp and moved lower for display, addressed to Lexington Ky. and Washington D.C., each with small cover tear at top, Very Fine pair of Baltimore carrier covers
U.S.P.O., Philadelphia Pa., 1c Blue (7LB12). Mostly large margins, tied by red star cancel on wrapper to York Springs Pa., blue "Philadelphia Pa. 5 May 4" integral-rate circular datestamp and matching "Paid" in octagon, Extremely Fine, a beautiful cover, ex Caspary, with 1995 P.F. certificate
Browne & Co.'s City Post Office, Cincinnati, 1c Black (29L1). Ample to large margins, very small tear at bottom, tied by black "City Post" in circle handstamp on buff cover to local street address, few minor wrinklesVERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE USE OF THE BROWNE & CO. ONE-CENT STAMP TIED ON A LOCALLY-ADDRESSED COVER.
Although Lyons records 33 1c Browne & Co. covers, the 1c is much rarer used alone on a local Cincinnati cover versus to-the-mails outbound usage. Lyons records only three such covers, plus one local cover with three uncancelled 1c stamps (The Penny Post, July 2004).

(Greig's) City Despatch Post, New York N.Y., 3c Black on Grayish (40L1). Original gum, huge margins all around, Extremely Fine Gem, a beautiful stamp and the first issued in the Western Hemisphere, with 1991 P.F. certificate, also incl. 3c Black, Defaced Die Proof on Wove, 58 x 63mm, Very Fine, Scott Retail for 40L1 only
(Cole's) Post Office City Despatch, New York N.Y., 2c Black on Green Glazed, "CC" at Sides (40L4). Position 26, cancelled by "Free" in frame (used previously by Greig) on 1848 folded cover to Boston, overlapping red New York (Feb. 5) and City Despatch circular datestamps, stamp with some usual creasing, otherwise Very Fine, the earliest "CC" stamps are found on Green paper (earliest documented use is Jan. 27, 1848), ex Geisler and New Amsterdam collection, with 2009 P.F. certificate
(Cole's) Post Office City Despatch, New York N.Y., 2c Black on Vermilion Glazed, "CC" at Sides (40L6). Position undetermined, large margins, only slight oxidation (much less than usual), tied by "Paid" straightline, second strike and partly readable "P.O. City Despatch Post Sep. 27 -- O'Clock" circular datestamp on 1848 folded letter to local street address, slight wear along file fold, still Extremely Fine, very scarce, ex Boker, Golden and New Amsterdam collection, with 2000 P.F. certificate
Forwarded by Hale & Co. from Springfield. Clear red oval handstamp and "Collect/Six Cents/for/Hale & Co." framed rate handstamp on green Sept. 1844 folded letter from Springfield to Boston, ink spot, Very Fine and scarce office marking
Wells, Fargo & Co. Pony Express, $1.00-$4.00, 10c-25c Horse & Rider Issues (143L1-143L5, 143L7-143L8). Complete set of the Transcontinental Horse & Rider stamps, with extra $4.00 Green, Virginia City Pony Express stamps incl. 10c Brown and two 25c Blue, unused (no gum), mostly full to ample margins, some large and only the duplicate 25c Blue cut in, a few tiny flaws, Fine-Very Fine or appear so, the Transcontinental set was issued under the terms of a government mail contract; therefore, they have semi-official status, two P.F. certificates accompany

Wells, Fargo & Co. Virginia City Pony Express, 10c Brown (143L7). Block of four, unused (no gum), ample to large margins, bright and fresh, Very Fine
Wells, Fargo & Co. Virginia City Pony Express, 25c Red (143L9). Complete sheet of 40 in four groups of ten, unused (no gum), vivid color, two very faint vertical creases, bright and freshEXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF THE FINEST OF THE FEW SURVIVING SHEETS OF THE 25-CENT RED VIRGINIA CITY PONY EXPRESS STAMP. A MAGNIFICENT EXHIBITION ITEM.
We have offered only two other complete sheets of 143L9 in our auctions since 2000: 1) sheet with stains and other faults (2003 Fall Rarities sale); and 2) ex Hall and Twigg-Smith sheet which last realized $12,500.00 hammer in 2009. This sheet is equal to the Hall sheet in terms of condition.

Wells, Fargo & Co. Pony Express, 25c Red entire (143LU3). Unused, with printed frank at top, Extremely Fine and scarcer than Scott Retail value suggests, particularly in this choice condition, ex Hall
Wells, Fargo & Co., (unstated value) Black, "To Be Dropped in New York Post Office" (143LP1). Unused (no gum), large to full margins, thin spots at top and right, Very Fine appearance and rare -- although listed in Scott under "Newspaper Stamps" in the Wells, Fargo & Co. section, 143LP1's real purpose was to pay the express fee on letters carried by Wells, Fargo & Co. over their steamship route and "dropped in New York Post Office" as the stamp states, with 2006 P.F. certificate
Carriers and Locals, Cover Balance. Six covers, incl, 2c Browne & Cos. (29L1) used on cover with No. 11A (triple frameline variety), 1997 P.F. certificate declining opinion on origination of the Browne stamp (both stamps creased), also No. LO2 used with No. 11A from Philadelphia, No. 6LB9 on cover, No. 15L17 on cover, No. 136L9 used with 11A (local not tied), finally stampless American Letter Mail Boston handstamp, some flaws to be found, overall Fine appearing group
Pacific Union Express Co. Two covers, both with "Paid" banner printed frank on U.S. 3c Pink entire, first with dry goods advertisement, cancelled by blue "Wells, Fargo & Co. Mountain View June 23" oval datestamp and addressed to San Francisco, slight overall toning, otherwise Very Fine, second cover cancelled by clear "Pacific Union Ex. Co. Suisun Oct. 17" double-circle datestamp, addressed to San Francisco, barely reduced at left, still Very Fine, attractive pair
