3c Rose, A. Grill (79). Unused (no gum), radiant color, clear grill, Very Fine and choice for this difficult issue, due to the nature of the all-over grill perforations on this issue are often quite defective, this is far better than those typically seen, with 1987 P.F. certificate
2c Black, Z. Grill, 3c Rose, A., C. and D. Grills (79, 83, 85, 85B). No. 83 with small part of top imprint margin, variety of cancels, No. 79 reperfed three sides, 85 small faults but exceptional appearing, overall Fine-Very Fine appearance, scarce lot, No. 79 with 1992 P.F. certificate and No. 83 with 1994 P.S.E. certificate

2c Black, Z. Grill (85B). Block of four, original gum with light reddish offset, h.r. at top, clearly-defined grills which clearly show the Z Grill characteristics, horizontal crease at bottom causing some grill point holes, creases in other stamps, small thinsVERY GOOD APPEARANCE. THIS 1868 2-CENT Z GRILL BLOCK IS ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL GRILLED ISSUE MULTIPLES. PERHAPS TWO OR THREE ARE KNOWN.
Only a small quantity of 2c sheets were grilled during the period when the Z device was active -- after the D Grill (Scott 84), the Z is the rarest of Black Jack grilled stamps. We were only able to locate two other unused blocks. One was offered in our 1970 Rarities sale and was well-centered (top pair creased), so that may have been broken to feed collector demand for choice singles. The other is a rejoined block, ex Allen and Metzger. The block offered here might be the only intact block of four.

3c Rose, Z. Grill (85C). Original gum, slightly disturbed from hinge removal, fresh color and attractive centering for this rare grill issue, light horizontal creaseVERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1868 3-CENT Z GRILL.
The 3c Z Grill was in production for only a short period of time before the device was replaced with the F Grill. Only a small number of 3c sheets were fed thru the Z Grill, which accounts for the rarity of surviving examples, especially in original-gum condition.
3c Rose, Z. Grill (85C). Wide margins, small part of target cancel, faint crease and some trivial slightly blunted perfs at top, otherwise Fine, with 1986 P.F. certificate

Horizontal strip of three, fresh color with odd geometric cancels, center stamp long sealed tear, right stamp minor top right corner crease, couple trivial perf flaws, otherwise Fine, a rare classic multiple and perfectly suited for the exhibitor who wants to show an impressive artifact without competing with vandals who would break this into singles if it were sound, Scott Retail as three used singles (pair listed but unpriced)
12c Black, Z. Grill (85E). Large part original gum, nicely centered with characteristic intense shade, small and trivial corner crease top rightVERY FINE AND CHOICE APPEARANCE. A RARE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1868 12-CENT Z GRILL.
