A RARE AND DESIRABLE MINT NEVER-HINGED PLATE BLOCK OF THE 1890 2-CENT CARMINE, WITH EACH STAMP SHOWING CAP ON THE LEFT "2".
The Scott Catalogue does not list the Cap on "2" plate variety in plate block form. Scott Retail as singles.

Block of four, small h.r. at top and bottom, crisp shade and impression, Very Fine-Extremely Fine, this beautiful Black Jefferson design was the last 30c U.S. definitive to be issued during the 19th Century (the Jefferson design was changed to 50c in 1894), examples rarely come this well-centered, especially in block form

AN ATTRACTIVE AND RARE PLATE BLOCK OF THE 30-CENT 1890 ISSUE. THIS IS THE FIRST INTACT PLATE BLOCK WE HAVE OFFERED SINCE KEEPING COMPUTERIZED RECORDS.
The beautiful Black Jefferson design was the last 30c U.S. definitive to be issued during the 19th Century (the Jefferson design was changed to 50c in 1894). Large multiples are surprisingly scarce. Power Search located a plate block of twelve, most recently offered in our Curtis sale, but the top row in that block has been separated and rejoined.

Plate 25 was the only plate used to print the 90c 1890 Issue, and plate blocks of this high value are exceedingly rare. Apart from the bottom position plate block in our recent Curtis sale, one has to go back to 2003 to find another in one of our auctions.

Complete set of pairs including No. 219D and additional shade of 2c Carmine, original gum, most with just a single light hinge mark, ample to large margins throughout, fresh colors, 2c Lake with small thins spotVERY FINE. A SCARCE AND CHOICE COMPLETE SET OF IMPERFORATE PAIRS OF THE 1890-93 SMALL BANK NOTE ISSUE.
