Nine stamps with original gum, each with "Special Surcharge" backstamp and hinged on three separate J. M. Bartels auction lot sheets with Bartels' pencil notes (2c and 2-1/2c marked "Same shade"), 10c Postage Due has tiny tear, otherwise all are soundFINE-VERY FINE. A REMARKABLE SET OF THE RARE CUBA SPECIAL PRINTINGS, PREPARED FOR POST OFFICE EXHIBITS AND RELEASED IN VERY SMALL QUANTITIES THROUGH J. M. BARTELS. CUBA, 1900, 10c on 10c Brown, Ty. II (226A). Original gum, h.r., pretty shadeFRESH AND FINE EXAMPLE OF THE CUBA 10-CENT ON 10-CENT TYPE II SPECIAL PRINTING.
In March 1900 one pane of each denomination was prepared for the Paris and Pan-American Expositions. For the 10c the Type II design was used, and it is only known as a Special Printing.
