CANAL ZONE, 1904, 8c on 50c Bister Brown, "Panama" Reading Down and Up (15, 15a). Positions 1-2/11-12, block of four with selvage at left, top left stamp the variety, usual tropicalized original gum, rich colors, few perf separationsVERY FINE. A RARE AND DESIRABLE BLOCK OF FOUR OF THE 8-CENT ON 50-CENT CANAL ZONE NO. 15 WITH THE TOP LEFT STAMP SHOWING "PANAMA" READING BOTH DOWN AND UP.
According to Canal Zone Stamps, this variety comes from Positions 1 and 51. Either eight or ten were printed. Eight are known. We have only offered one other since keeping computerized records (ex Plass and Drucker) which was a single. The example offered here, in a block, is a wonderful exhibition piece.

CANAL ZONE, 1904, 8c on 50c Bister Brown (15). Used with 1c on 20c Violet (16), tied by "Tabernilla Apr. 24, 1906" duplex cancels on Canal Zone Commission corner card cover with "Official Business" crossed out, addressed to Surgeon J. C. Perry at Ancon, receiving backstamp of the following dayVERY FINE. ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE 8-CENT ON 50-CENT SURCHARGE USED ON COVER. A PHENOMENAL RARITY.
According to the book Canal Zone Stamps only 500 of Scott No. 15 were issued, making it one of the rarest Canal Zone stamps. Of these, only seven used copies are recorded. At the time of the book's publication (1986) only one cover bearing this issue was recorded. That cover (ex Plass) bears two 2c stamps (No. 11) and was also used to Ancon on the same day as the example offered here, though to a different recipient. The description of the other cover in the 1993 Plass sale noted the existence of this second cover, narrowing down its discovery date.

GUAM, 1899, 10c Brown, Ty. II (9). Original gum, barest trace of hinging, wonderfully bright shade and crisp impression, uncharacteristically well centeredVERY FINE AND CHOICE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 1-CENT TYPE II WITH GUAM OVERPRINT.
The 10c Type II with Guam overprint exists both as a regular issue and a Special Printing. With 2007 P.F. certificate.
HAWAII, 1851, 5c Blue (2). Type I, accompanying 1963 certificate states used but we find no evidence of a cancellation, bright color, margins all around, expertly repaired including sealed tear near topVERY FINE APPEARANCE. ONE OF THE MOST ATTRACTIVE EXAMPLES OF THE 5-CENT HAWAIIAN MISSIONARY ISSUE IN EXISTENCE.

Type I, unused, small part original gum, full to large margins, deep shade and fine impression, bottom right corner repaired with small part of design painted in and some staining, additional small repair at top rightVERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE UNUSED 13-CENT "HAWAIIAN POSTAGE" MISSIONARY. ONLY EIGHT UNUSED EXAMPLES ARE RECORDED IN OUR CENSUS.

Eight examples are thought to be unused, of which five have portions of the design painted in. Only three can be considered sound or with minor faults.

Large margins to barely touched, tied by "San Francisco Cal. 20 May" (1856) circular datestamp on cover to Miss Abby Marshall in Charlestown Mass., bold strike of red "Honolulu * U.S. Postage Paid * Apr. 14" circular datestamp, few cosmetic improvements around edges, stamp slightly affected from placement at edge of coverVERY FINE APPEARANCE. A CHOICE EXAMPLE OF THE 12-CENT 1851 USED FROM HAWAII, PAYING THE 10-CENT TRANSCONTINENTAL POSTAGE AND 2-CENT SHIP CAPTAIN'S FEE.
Carried on the American schooner Julius Pringle, which departed Honolulu April 14, 1856, and arrived in San Francisco on May 6 (the mail was not stamped until May 20 or 21). With 1988 P.F. certificate
12c Black (17). Horizontal pair, margins to just in, tied by "San Francisco Cal. 16 May" (1854) circular datestamp on orange-buff cover originating in Hawaii, with original enclosure datelined "Honolulu Feby. 22, 1854" and written by U.S. Consul Benjamin Franklin Angell, to Moscow N.Y., back of cover with "Forwarded by G.B. Post & Co., San Francisco" octagonal forwarder's marking, interesting content including "In my judgement these Pacific Islands will be made a Territory of the United States in less than a year; a treaty of cession is now in progress of negotiation and I am hurrying it forward with all my power", other fascinating commentary including comparison of Hawaiian indigenous population to American Indians, stamps with some toning from gum, right stamp pre-use crease, some edgewearVERY FINE. A FASCINATING COVER AND ENCLOSURE SENT FROM THE UNITED STATES CONSUL IN HAWAII, WITH FANTASTIC HISTORICAL CONTENT.
This cover was carried outside of the mails on the American schooner Sovereign (formerly known as the Ka Moi), which carried the largest despatch of mail from Hawaii with over 3,200 letters sent (source: Gregory book). The Sovereign departed Honolulu on April 23, 1854, and arrived in San Francisco on May 6. In San Francisco this was handed over to G. B. Post, who put it into the mails on the next available ship.

Hastings at College Hill Ohio, used with United States 12c Black (17), ample even margins, both stamps tied by "San Francisco Cal. Nov. 7, 1857" circular datestampEXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL MIXED FRANKING WITH THE 1857 5-CENT KAMEHAMEHA III SECOND PRINTING AND UNITED STATES 12-CENT 1851 ISSUE.
This cover was carried on the American bark Yankee, which departed Honolulu on Oct. 6, 1857, and arrived in San Francisco on Oct. 22. Mail for the East Coast via Panama was datestamped on Nov. 5.

HAWAII, 1861, 5c Blue, Thin Bluish Wove (9). Large margins to full, tied by perfect strike of square grid cancel, "Honolulu Hawaiian-Islands Jul. 7" (1864) circular datestamp on cover to Rev. Charles Brooks in Medford Mass., remarkably bold strikes of "San Francisco Cal. Jul. 29, 1864" double-circle datestamp and "SHIP 6" handstamp, neatly docketed at top "Wm. Brigham, Sandwich Islands"EXTREMELY FINE. A SUPERB TIED EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT KAMEHAMEHA III 1861 THIRD PRINTING ON BLUISH PAPER. A GORGEOUS COVER.
Gregory reports 50 covers with the 5c Third Printing (Scott 9), but only 15 are covers with this stamp used alone (not in combination with United States stamps). This cover was carried on the American bark Yankee, which departed Honolulu on July 7, 1864, and arrived San Francisco on July 29.
Letters from Hawaii to San Francisco showing the 1863 rates are discussed in the Gregory book (Volume II, pages 165-169). The San Francisco post office inconsistently applied the 4c and 6c collect rates. Six examples are recorded by Gregory.

Mar. 19" double-circle datestamp, sender's directive "Via San Francisco and Panama" at left, slightly reduced at left and some wear, Hawaii stamp with tear at topVERY FINE APPEARANCE. The sender's notation "Via San Francisco and Panama" is an unusual reference to the Panama route.
HAWAII, 1866, 5c Blue (32). Deep rich color, tied by large 7-bar grid cancel, red "Honolulu U.S. Postage Paid Sep. 5" (1868) circular datestamp on manila cover to Victoria, British Columbia, used with horizontal pair of United States 5c Brown (76) and 2c Black, E. Grill (87), tied by circle of V's cancel and "San Francisco Cal. Oct. 7" circular datestamp, pair with few short perfs at rightVERY FINE. A COLORFUL AND RARE MIXED FRANKING WITH THE 1866 5-CENT KAMEHAMEHA V AND UNITED STATES GRILLED AND UNGRILLED ISSUES. ESPECIALLY RARE WITH A BLACK JACK STAMP.
Very few U.S.-Hawaiian mixed-franking covers with the 2c Black Jack are known. This is a late treaty period use, after the 5c/10c contract steamer rates became effective September 25, 1867. This was carried on either the American bark Comet, which departed Honolulu on Sep. 5, 1868, and arrived San Francisco on Sep. 25, or on the American bark D. C. Murray, which departed Honolulu on Sep. 16 and arrived in San Francisco on Oct. 6.

AN UNUSUAL MIXED FRANKING, BUT SENT FROM HAWAII TO THE UNITED STATES OUTSIDE OF THE MAILS.
The absence of a Hawaiian postmark suggests this was carried privately to San Francisco where it entered the mails. The cover was franked to pay the contract rate by Hawaiian Steam Service.

10c Green (68). Tied by circle of wedges cancel on 3c Pink on Buff entire (U59) to Springfield, Vermont, bold strike of black "Honolulu Hawaiian-Islands Nov. 13" (1867) circular datestamp, light red "HAWAIIAN/STEAM/SERVICE" oval handstamp, edge stains and small tears, entire rejoined at edges, 10c with creases along top margin from placement at edge of cover, still Fine, though the 3c envelope stamp was superflous, the sender may have been under the impression the 2c ship fee had to be paid, not realizing it was no longer required with the introduction of steam service in September 1867, ex Honolulu Advertiser, with 2005 P.F. certificate
HAWAII, 1864, 2c Black, Laid (24). Plate 7-A, Types I-X (Westerberg Positions 1-10), two complete panes in a block of 20, unused (no gum), large margins, few usual light horizontal and vertical creases mostly between stampsEXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF TWO RECORDED BLOCKS OF THIS SIZE, WHICH IS THE LARGEST RECORDED MULTIPLE OF THE 1864 2-CENT NUMERAL ON LAID PAPER.

Only a small percentage of the 746 $5.00 1903 “Philippines” Overprint issued were used.

Lightly hinged and completely free from the effects of wax paper adherences which affect this issue, deep rich color, much better centered than most examples of this issueVERY FINE EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 26-CENTAVO PERF 12 SINGLE-LINE WATERMARK AIR POST ISSUE. ONLY 100 WERE OVERPRINTED.
The vast majority examples of this stamp we have encountered are centered strongly to the left, this one being an exception to the rule.
