A RARE PART-IMPRINT COPY OF THE 5-CENT 1856 ISSUE, WHICH ALSO HAS A DISTINCT DOUBLE TRANSFER. WE ONLY RECORD THREE STAMPS FROM THIS POSITION. A GREAT RARITY OF THE ISSUE.
The discovery of the double transfer on this issue was originally made by Stanley Piller in an article in the May 1983 Chronicle. We know that it is a constant, because it is also found on perforated example of the 5c Brown (29) with part imprint selvage. This second stamp also accompanies this lot and is sound.

D Relief from either the fourth or seventh row of the plate (confirmed by guide dot at lower right), with clear double transfer in "FIVE CENTS" at bottom, full margins all around, rich color, neat strike of New Orleans circular datestamp, faint pressed-out vertical crease, Very Fine appearance, plate varieties of the 5c 1856 Issue are very rare, the position of this double transfer is not known, it is significantly different from the one Scott-listed position (40R1), with 1984 P.F. certificate and note from Stanley Piller
5c Red Brown, Curl on Head (12 var). B Relief, full and even margins, bright shade, showing colorless curl at top right of head, neat strike of circular datestamp, Very Fine, an interesting variety of an issue known for its uniformity, unlisted in Scott, further research is warranted to determine if this is a printing flaw or a constant variety, ex Oakley

10c Black, Ty. III, Trial Color Plate Proof on Wove Stamp Paper (15TC5). Appears to be backed by thin card, horizontal and vertical manuscript defacement lines, large margins, affixed to thin card, some thinningVERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE BLACK TRIAL COLOR PLATE PROOF OF THE 10-CENT 1855 ISSUE. ONLY TWO ARE REPORTED TO EXIST.
This exact proof is illustrated in the Neinken book (Fig.6-K), where the origin of 1851 Issue plate proofs in Black on regular paper is discussed. It is believed that these proofs, with and without ruled lines, were produced in 1856. The other example was offered in our 2006 Rarities of the World auction and is now in a private specialized 10c collection and not likely to be available for years.
