With 2004 P.F. certificate (submitted as Ridgway Chestnut Brown).

Based on the color, impression and blue town datestamp, we classify this as an Early Impression Dark Brown from the First Printing, and it was probably used from Philadelphia.

Based on the color, impression and blue grid cancel, we classify this as an Early Impression Dark Brown from the First Printing, and it was probably used from Philadelphia.
With 1999 P.S.E. certificate as Dark Brown (1a) and 2002 and 2007 P.F. certificates as Brown (XF-Superb 95).

Large margins to full, intense color in the distinctive Walnut Brown shade with certificate confirming "Walnut Brown shade by Ridgway color standards", detailed early impression, bold strike of black circular datestamp cancelVERY FINE. A CHOICE EXAMPLE OF THE DISTINCTIVE DARK "WALNUT BROWN", WHICH IS ONE OF THE RAREST OF THE MYRIAD 5-CENT 1847 SHADES.
According to an article by Calvet M. Hahn in the May-June 1986 Collector's Club Philatelist (p. 209), this shade comes from the First Printing. It appears to be a more intense variation of the Dark Brown shade, and Hahn noted it is "quite distinctive".

5c Blackish Brown (1a var). Extremely deep and dark color from an early impression, which is closer in appearance to the 10c Black 1847 Issue than the usual Red Brown of the 5c, large margins all around, nicely complemented by red grid cancelEXTREMELY FINE EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT 1847 ISSUE IN THE DISTINCTIVE BLACKISH BROWN SHADE. A BEAUTIFUL STAMP IN EVERY RESPECT.

5c Orange Brown (1b). Vivid color and detailed early impression, large to full margins, bold blue "PAID" in oval cancel of Philadelphia struck twice, Extremely Fine, a beautiful stamp, with 2000 P.F. certificate as Red Brown (inexplicably) and 2015 P.F. certificate as Orange Brown (correct)

Vivid color and early impression, called "Ridgway Auburn" on most recent certificate, full to ample margins, neat red grid cancel, Very Fine and choice, a beautiful First Printing Orange Brown which the P.F. has classified as "Auburn", ex Barwis, with 1987 and 2007 P.F. certificates, the latter stating "Ridgway Auburn shade from the First Printing of 1847".
