Annapolis Md., (5c) Red Handstamp (2XU1 var). Clear strike on flap of folded cover with matching "5" handstamp and "Annapolis Md. Apr. 23" circular datestamp, addressed to Philip Barton Key, U.S. Attorney for Washington D.C., tears including one through the handstamp, old scotch tape stains and piece of back cut out, Fine strike, Philip Barton Key was the great-nephew of Francis Scott Key and also the nephew of Chief Justice Roger B. Taney, he was shot and killed in 1859 by then congressman and future Union major general Daniel Sickles for having a public affair with Sickles' wife -- represented by future Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, Sickles successfully adopted a defense of temporary insanity and was acquitted (the first time that defense was successfully used in the United States), Sickles went on to a controversial career as a "political general", was nearly court-martialed after his debacle leading the III Corps at Gettysburg and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1897
