10c Yellow, Coil (356). Pair, radiant color, choice centering for this difficult issueVERY FINE AND CHOICE PAIR OF THE RARE 10-CENT 1909 HORIZONTAL COIL ISSUE.
According to Johl (Volume 1, page 181), only 10,000 of this coil were issued. They were made especially for a New York firm to send out advertising samples, similar to the 3c Orangeburg coil. Only a few rolls were sold to the firm, and the remaining rolls were distributed to some of the larger post offices across the country. Dealers acquired several rolls, but as most collectors of the time did not collect coils many were used and destroyed.

A review of our Levi records of the Bluish Paper stamps shows that the 4c is much rarer than the 8c in well-centered condition.

3c Deep Violet, Orangeburg Coil (389). Choice centering with wide margins, deep rich color and proof-like impression showing every detail of the engraving, neat wavy-line machine cancel used at Orangeburg N.Y.VERY FINE AND CHOICE. A BEAUTIFUL SOUND EXAMPLE OF THE 3-CENT ORANGEBURG COIL.
Due to their use on mass mailings, many of the existing Orangeburg coils are faulty to some extent. The most common defects are corner creases or tears. Sound and well-centered copies have been recognized by collectors as truly rare, and bidding has been fierce for premium copies such as the stamp offered here.

The paste-up process was necessary to produce rolls of coils from half-sheets of 20 stamps wide. Only one of every ten coil pairs was a paste-up. This single is one of four recorded 3c Orangeburg paste-ups, including the unused pair.
