Canton Miss., 5c Black entire (14XU1). Perfect strike of provisional handstamp on grayish-blue cover to Jackson Miss., "Canton Miss. Sep. 13, 1861" circular datestamp, Extremely Fine, a superb strike of this fancy provisional handstamp, the "P" in center of the star is the initial of Postmaster William Priestly, ex Przybyl, with 1982 P.F. and 2001 C.S.A. certificates, Scott value $4,000.00
Knoxville Tenn., 5c Black entire (47XU5). Clear strike of "Paid 5" circular provisional handstamp on cover to Memphis Tenn, with Jefferson Davis Medallion, 7-Star Flags and 10-Star Sunburst Patriotic design (JD-1B), minor waterstains at top clear of the Patriotic designVERY FINE APPEARANCE AND EXTREMELY RARE. THIS IS ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE KNOXVILLE 5-CENT PROVISIONAL ON A PATRIOTIC COVER.
We have stated in the past that there are only two recorded examples of a No. 47XU5 Patriotic -- the Flag and Cannon cover from the Boshwit and Kilbourne collections (Sale 1186, lot 547) and the 7-Star Confederate Flag design from the Kilbourne collection (Sale 1190, lot 1504). This cover has been off the market since the 1960s and was not part of our records.
