5c Brown, First Design (57). Unused (no gum), rich color, few flaws incl. reperfed and small thin spots, only the latter mentioned on accompanying certificate which also mentions a tiny tearFINE APPEARANCE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 1861 5-CENT FIRST DESIGN.
Our census of Scott 57, available at our website at http://www.siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/57/57.pdf , contains a total of 36 copies of this rarity. Of these, one is in The New York Public Library collection. Of the 35 thought to be available to collectors, two are used, 18 have no gum, seven have part gum and seven have full original gum. None of the full-gum copies is completely sound. Four of the part-gum copies are sound. Of the no-gum copies, only two are sound; three others may be sound but need to be reexamined as they have not been seen in decades, and thirteen have faults of varying degrees.

5c Buff (67). Original gum which covers the entire back with two large hinge spots, rich color, tiny thin spot at top leftFINE APPEARING AND RARE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT BUFF 1861 ISSUE.
The 5c Brown Yellow and Buff shades are among the rarest of 1861-66 Issue stamps in original gum condition. Perhaps the only shade varieties rarer are the 3c Pigeon Blood Pink and 24c Blackish Violet (Scott 64a and 78c), but Scott 67 is a major catalogue listing and is, therefore, more significant to completion of the series.

Feb. 25" circular datestamp on cover to Philadelphia, pair with small flaws incl. tiny tear in right stamp and some perf faults from placement near edge, still Very Fine appearing and rare use of a pair of the 5c Buff to pay the over-3,000 miles rate from California to Philadelphia, Scott Retail for pair off cover $2,400.00

5c 1861-68 Issues, Balance (67, 75-76, 95). 29 stamps on a single stock page, five No. 67, approximately five No. 75 with three unused (no gum or regummed), a couple No. 95 and the balance No. 76 with more than five unused, range of cancels on the used incl. a couple fancy, faults to be expected throughout but some appear Fine-Very Fine, substantial catalogue value in excess of $17,000.00

5c Red Brown (75). Large part disturbed original gum called "part original gum" on accompanying certificate, deep rich color, small corner crease at top left, Very Fine appearance, with 1989 P.F. certificate
5c Dark Red Brown (75). Vertical pair, wonderful depth of color, tied by "New York Jul. 1, 1862" double-circle datestamp and target on small cover to Hamliton, Canada West, original enclosure, slightly reduced at right, still Very Fine, Scott Retail as pair $1,200.00
