Large margins to just barely in outer frameline at upper left, intense shade, used with Hawaii, 1857, 5c Blue, Thin White Wove (8), Position 2 with line thru "Honolulu" at left, large to ample margins, red "Honolulu U.S. Postage Paid Apr. 21" (1858) circular datestamp on light buff cover to Miss Mary Hastings in South Hadley Mass., stamps uncancelled when they left Honolulu, both tied by light strike of "San Francisco Cal. Jun. 5" circular datestampEXTREMELY FINE. A REMARKABLE UNBITED STATES AND HAWAII MIXED-FRANKING COVER WITH THE 12-CENT 1851 ISSUE AND 1857 5-CENT KAMEHAMEHA III SECOND PRINTING FROM POSITION 2 -- THE LINE THRU "HONOLULU" TRANSFER VARIETY.
This cover was carried on the schooner Liholiho, which departed Honolulu on Apr. 26, 1858 (mail was datestamped on Apr. 21) and arrived in San Francisco on May 21 (mail for the East Coast was datestamped on June 5).

Jun. 17" origination circular datestamp, some toning and cover wearVERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 3-CENT 1851 ISSUE USED FROM CANADA.

II (11A), all stamps tied by perfect strikes of blue "Troy N.Y. Oct. 9" circular datestamp on orange-yellow cover to Stanbridge, Canada East, red "U. States" in scroll cross-border handstamp, red "St. Johns L.C. Oct. 20" circular datestamp, overall light cover wrinkling, one 3c stamp with light pre-use corner crease, still an Extremely Fine cover with fresh stamps and strong markings, ex Vogel

Cushing, Proprietor" handstamped corner card cover to Toronto, Canada West, 1857 docketing, light strike of receiving backstamp, some slight wear, Very Fine, with 1987 P.F. certificate
10c Green, Ty. III (15). Large margins all around, tied by "Peru Ind. May 18" circular datestamp on cover to Sandwich, Canada West, red "United States 6d" in oval and red "Paid" handstamps, 1857 Windsor and receiving backstamps, trivial wear, Very Fine, with 2005 P.F. certificate
12c Black (17). Three large margins including part of adjoining stamp at left, just in at top, tied by grid cancel on folded cover to Havana, Cuba and forwarded to Matanzas, stamp also tied by blue "NA" handstamp, also blue "F" and "2" and "1" rate markings, light strike of March 1852 Havana backstamp, some slight edgewear including toning bands at sides, vertical file fold well away from stamp, Very Fine, carried on the American Packet Empire City to Havana where the "NA" applied indicating it came from North America and "2" due marking from recipient, the "F" and "1" rating were then applied for forwarding, with 2001 P.F. certificate

Horizontal pair, huge margins to clear (overlapped by 1c stamps so unable to confirm that margin) including significant portion of adjoining stamps at top, used with horizontal pair of 1c Blue, Ty. II and IIIa (7, 8A), Plate 1E, right stamp Type IIIa with wide break at top, other margins huge to just in at top left, also used with 3c Dull Red, Ty. II (11A), large margins to clear and also underlapping 12c pair, tied by blue "San Francisco Cal. Paid 6 15 Jan." circular datestamps on blue 1853 folded cover to Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, England, green Birmingham and receiving backstamps, red "3" credit handstamp, red "America Liverpool Paid MR 2, 1853" transit circular datestamp, horizontal file fold at top affects 1c and 12c stamps which were originally folded over top edge of cover and cover refolded for displayVERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE COVER WITH A COMPLETE SET OF THE 1851 ISSUE USED TO FULLY PREPAY THE 29-CENT RATE FROM CALIFORNIA TO ENGLAND.
The rate paid was 10c transcontinental plus 16c packet plus 3c for British internal postage. Carried on the Collins Line Atlantic, which departed New York Feb. 19, 1853, and arrived in Liverpool on March 2.

II (11A), similar margins, affixed slightly overlapping and cancelled by manuscript "#"'s on 3c Red on Buff Nesbitt entire (U10), similarly cancelled, to Manchester, England, blue "Skaneateles N.Y. Aug. 25" circular datestamp, red "38" credit handstamp, "America Liverpool Paid SP 6, 1856" transit, "Boston Br. Pkt. 27 Aug." and receiving backstamps, few small filing holes, entire with small repair at bottom right, Very Fine, attractive use paying double the 24c rate, carried on the Cunarder Canada which departed Boston Aug. 27, 1856 and arrived Liverpool Sept. 7 (the Liverpool marking was probably not changed to the new date), with 1999 P.F. certificate
1c Blue, Ty. II (7). Plate 2, full margins to clear, tied by "Boston Paid 4 Sep." circular datestamp on printed Prices Current from England to Salem Mass., dated "London, Friday 22nd August 1856" and with "PERSIA" (Cunard steamer) printed at top left, fresh and Very Fine, carried outside of the mails on the Cunarder Persia which departed Liverpool Aug. 23, 1856 and arrived New York Sep. 3, the 1c stamp paid the domestic circular rate, with 2003 P.F. certificate
1c Blue, Ty. IV (9). Horizontal strip of five from Plate 1 Late, mostly ample to large margins except where slightly in at left, minute tear between two stamps, lightly cancelled by grids and tied by red "Providence R.I. Sep. 16" circular datestamp with matching "Paid" handstamp on 1854 folded letter to Paris, France, sender's directive "Per Steamer 'Africa' via NYK & Liverpool", red "New-York Br. Pkt." exchange office datestamp, red Paris Oct. 3 circular datestamp also ties strip, manuscript "26" decimes due marking, carried on the Cunarder Africa which departed New York Sept. 20, 1854 and arrived Liverpool Oct. 1FRESH AND VERY FINE. THE USE OF FIVE ONE-CENT 1851 STAMPS FOR THE SHORE-TO-SHIP RATE ON TRANSATLANTIC MAIL IS EXTREMELY UNUSUAL. THE STRIP AND COMBINATION OF RED MARKINGS CREATE A COLORFUL AND RARE 1851 ISSUE COVER.

3c Dull Red, Ty. I (11). Horizontal strip of seven, large margins to just in, deep rich color on bright paper, , tied by grids, red "New Orleans La. Nov. 6" circular datestamp on blue 1855 folded cover to Bordeaux, France, blue pencil "21", red "New York Am. Pkt. Nov. 17" circular datestamp also ties stamps as does red Le Havre transit, "6" decimes due marking, light file folds do not affect stamps, second stamp from left small wrinkling at top, Very Fine, overpaid 20c American Packet Direct rate to France via New York-Havre Line, the strip was sufficient for and probably intended to prepay the 21c rate via England (as evidenced by the blue "21"); however, the letter reached New York in time for the Havre line sailing of the Arago, which departed New York on Nov. 17 and arrived at Havre Dec. 1, ex Caspary

May 27" circular datestamps on 1853 folded letter to Paris, France, addressed to Charles Toppan of Toppan, Carpenter & Co. fame, the printers who produced the 1851-57 Issue, sender's directing "Steamer pr. Baltic May 28" at lower left and carried on that Collins Line's vessel which departed New York May 28 and arrived Liverpool June 7, light strike of "New York Am. Pkt. May 28" circular datestamp, London and receiving backstamps, manuscript "16" decimes due marking, minor wear, Very Fine and scarce use paying the 21c rate Open Mail, American Packet via England
5c Red Brown (12). Large margins to clear, bright color, tied by "New Orleans la. Mar. 15" circular datestamp on blue 1857 folded letter to Paris, France, "Boston Br. Pkt. 23 Mar.", London and receiving backstamps, clear strike of "GB/1F60C" Anglo-French accountancy handstamp, "16" decimes due marking, vertical file fold just affects stamp, otherwise Very Fine and attractive Three Months period use, carried on the Cunarder America, which departed Bostom March 25 and arrived Liverpool April 6, ex Major Tapp (1953 Robson Lowe sale)
5c Red Brown (12). Large margins all around, faint crease at bottom in margin only, tied by "Nauvoo Ills. Aug. 20" circular datestamp on 1857 folded letter to France, used with 10c Green, Ty. III (15), large margins, cancelled by manuscript and tied by manuscript mark indicating double rate, red "SHORT PAID" handstamp, 5c tied by "New York 6 Sep. 2" debit circular datestamp, magenta "15" rate crossed out by "16" decimes handstamp, second strike below, appropriate transit and receiving markings, address originally crossed out and subsequently restored with ink, lightened as a result (not mentioned on accompanying certificate), Very Fine appearance, carried on the Cunarder Arabia, which departed New York Sep. 2, 1857 and arrived Liverpool Sep. 13, this is the only recorded use of a "Short Paid" marking on a cover with the 5c 1856 Issue, Census No. 12-COV-319, ex "Patrick Henry", our 1992 Rarities sale, Mayer and Hackmey, with 2006 P.F. certificate

Jun. 28, 1857" circular datestamps on blue folded letter to Brest, France, red "New York Paid 12 Jul. 8" credit datestamp, red French transit, receiving backstamp, light horizontal file fold well clear of stamps, right stamp small toned spot, cover refolded at leftVERY FINE AND ATTRACTIVE TREATY-RATE COVER TO FRANCE BEARING THREE LARGE-MARGINED SINGLES OF THE 5-CENT 1856 ISSUE.
Carried on the Cunarder Persia, which departed New York July 8, 1857 and arrived Liverpool July 17. Census No. 12-COV-10. Ex Waterhouse and Mayer. With 1969 and 2009 P.F. certificates.
12c Black (17). Horizontal pair, large margins to just in, tied by light strike of circular datestamp on small 1858 cover to Brussels, Belgium, red "New-York Am. Pkt. May 8" circular datestamp, manuscript "2" and blue Belgian "4" rates, London (May 22), Ostende (May 23) and receiving (May 23) backstamps, also "58" in circle backstamp, tiny tear at top between stamps, some slight cover toning, Very Fine and unusual use, since the next sailing of the Havre Line was May 29, this was actually sent on the Inman Line's Kangaroo, which departed New York May 8, 1858 and arrived Liverpool May 22, since it was sent via British Packet the payment should only have been 5c paid by sender with 12p due from recipient, based on the markings this was treated as if sent via American Packet so only 4p was due from recipient with 2p going to England, a most unusual use, ex Grunin
1c Blue, Ty. IIIa (8A). Positions 73-74L4, horizontal pair, three full margins, clear to just touched at top, deep rich Plate 4 color, tied by "New Orleans La. Aug. 3" circular datestamp on folded printed circular dated Aug. 1, 1857 to Augsbourg, Bavaria, Germany red French transit, blue "Printed Circular/Per Steamer" two-line handstamp, receiving backstamp, minor edgewear, Very Fine, scarce use of 1c Imperforate Type IIIa pair, with 1972 P.F. certificate
12c Black (17). Vertical pair, full margins to just in at top left, tied by neat strike of "Towsontown Md. Jul. 30" circular datestamp on 1857 cover to Paris, France and forwarded to Geneva, Switzerland, "New York Paid 6 Aug. 1" credit circular datestamp, French transits and receiving backstamp, red "3" crossed out by grid and marked "35cs" due, with original enclosure, small repair at top left corner of top stamp (not mentioned on accompanying certificate), stamps were lifted during repair and put back on the cover (also not mentioned on accompanying certificate), still Very Fine, a very unusual use, sent on the American Collins Line's Atlantic, which departed New York Aug. 1, 1857 and arrived Liverpool Aug. 12, it was mistakenly given a 3c credit in New York (the clerk must have thought this was paying the 24c rate to England), the 24c in stamps overpaid by 9c the 15c rate to France, this was then charged 35 centimes for forwarding postage from France to Switzerland, another cover with similar franking, also forwarded to Switzerland, is also known from this correspondence, with 1999 P.F. certificate
12c Black (17). Large margins to barely in at top right, tied by well-struck "New Orleans La. Jan. 16, 1858" circular datestamp on folded letter to Rapperswyl, Switzerland, well-struck "GB/1F60C" Anglo-French accountancy handstamp, "Boston Br. Pkt. 27 Jan." backstamp, also London, Paris, Zurich, Basel and receiving backstamps, red crayon "95" rappen due from recipient, light horizontal file fold well away from stamp, the stamp with small scissors cut at top left and small toned spot in right margin, otherwise Very Fine, carried on the Cunarder America, which departed Boston Jan. 27, 1858 and arrived Liverpool Feb. 9, this was then sent to France where forwarded to Switzerland, the 12c stamp overpaid the 5c rate (3c domestic U.S. postage plus 2c shore-to-ship fee) and was treated as unpaid for sea postage, Great Britain charged France postage and the recipient paid 95 rappen (equivalent to 18c), a most unusual use, signed Holcombe and with his certificate, with 2004 P.F. certificate
5c Red Brown (12). Large margins to clear, lovely warm shade, tied by red "Annapolis Md. Oct. 11" circular datestamp on blue 1856 folded letter to the U.S.S. Susquehanna at Spezzia, Sardinia, Italy, red "New-York Br. Pkt. Oct. 15" circular datestamp, "17" manuscript due marking, French transit, various backstamps including London, Paris, Genova and receiving, endorsed "per Cunard line" at top right and carried aboard that line's Africa, which departed New York Oct. 15, 1856 and arrived in Liverpool Oct. 27, missing side flaps, still Very Fine, only eight covers are recorded from this correspondence to a U.S. naval surgeon on the U.S.S. Susquehanna, ex Haas, Mayer and Hackmey, with 2005 P.F. certificate
12c Black (17). Horizontal pair, large to ample margins with framelines all around, intense shade, tied by bold "Chicago Ill. Jul. 18, 1856" circular datestamp on cover to U.S.S. Constellation at Spezzia, Sardinia, bold red "New-York Am. Pkt. Jul. 19" and French transit datestamps, manuscript "10" due marking, transit and receiving (Aug. 1856) backstamps, with copy of original enclosure, left stamp small corner crease at bottom left ending in tiny tear, still fresh and Very Fine, scarce use of 12c 1851 overpaying the 21c rate by 3c, carried on the Collins Line's Baltic, which departed New York July 19, 1856 and arrived Liverpool July 30, with 2002 P.F. certificate
3c Orange Brown, Ty. II (10A). Position 72L2E, large margins to just in at top left, small scissors-cut in bottom margin prior to use, deep rich color, tied by "Brunswick Me. 3 Paid Mar. 25" circular datestamp on brown cover to U.S. Ship 'Saratoga' via Naval Lyceum and sent to recipient in Hong Kong via Macao, clear strike of "U.S. Naval Lyceum" full-rigged sailing ship handstamp at left, docketed at top "Recd. Hong Kong Jan. 5, 1853 pr. (coal ship) Gertrude, Macao", minor edgewear, top flap expertly reattachedVERY FINE. A RARE USE OF THE 3-CENT 1851 ORANGE BROWN STAMP ON A COVER SENT VIA THE U.S. NAVAL LYCEUM TO THE RECIPIENT IN HONG KONG.
This oval handstamp depicting a full-rigged ship was applied to mail forwarded to naval personnel from the the U.S. Naval Lyceum in Brooklyn at no additional charge. In the case of this letter, it took nine months to reach the recipient.
3c Brownish Carmine, Ty. II (11A). Large margins to just in, tied by blue "Charleston S.C. Paid Jun. 28" circular datestamp on 1852 folded letter to New York and forwarded to Canton, China, carried from New York to China outside of the mails and endorsed "pr Gertrude", docketing on back indicates received Jan. 4, 1853 (five months in transit), vertical file folds not affecting stamp, Very Fine, an unusual use
