Intense color and beautifully centered, lightly struck quartered cork cancel, magenta "San Francisco Paid All Jan. 1" (1870) circular datestamp on folded cover to Yokohama, Japan, from the Thorel correspondence with docketing indicating it originated in New York City on Nov. 24, 1869, and arrived in Yokohama on Jan. 31, 1870, "Barron & Co. San Francisco Dec. 2, 1869" forwarder's backstamp, sender's directive "p Pacific Mail", cleaned to remove some gum stains, still Extremely Fine, this was carried outside the mails to a San Francisco forwarder and sent by Pacific Mail Steamship Co. contract sailing to Japan (probably the China, arriving Yokohama Jan. 31, 1870), ex Wunsch and Coulter

Brown in Niigata, Japan, via Yokohama, trivial perf flaws from overlapping at edge, tiny nick in bottom left corner of cover, otherwise Very Fine -- the addressee, Rev. Samuel Robbins Brown, was one of five foreign residents permitted to live in Niigata, a port city on Honshu, which was established in 1858, but not opened until January 1, 1869 -- ex Coulter

Oct. 29" (1869) circular datestamp on buff cover to Herstelle, Germany, red "New York Paid All Direct Nov. 2" circular datestamp and red "Paid all" italic straightline handstamp also struck in Baltimore, red framed "Hamburg Franco" transit, receiving backstamp, Extremely Fine stamp and markings, a beautiful example of the distinctive red Baltimore cancels on foreign-bound mail, ex Grunin and Coulter, with 1972 P.F. certificate

12c Green (117). Tied by red Dot in Circle foreign mail cancel with matching "Baltimore Md. Sep. 10" (1869) circular datestamp on orange-buff cover to Oxford, England, red "New York Sep. 11" transit datestamp, docketing on back, barely reduced at top, Very Fine and extremely rare use of this cancel on the 12c Adriatic, the Baltimore post office used this distinctive red cancel on foreign-bound mail for only approximately three weeks, with only eight covers recorded, postmarked between August 18 and September 10, 1869 (this is the latest recorded use), ex Drucker and Dr. Skinner, P.F. certificate no. 59291 no longer accompanies
