24c Grayish Lilac (78a). Horizontal pair, brilliant color, each with perfect strike of Bat fancy cancel of Hingham Mass. (Skinner-Eno PA-BT 1), Very Fine and choice, a gorgeous pair, with 1987 and 1992 P.F. certificates, the former as Scott 70a
24c Lilac (78). Rich color nicely complemented by Blue Bird fancy cancel of Rockford Ill. (Skinner-Eno PA-B 18), Very Fine and choice, we have offered only a half-dozen unduplicated examples of this cancel since keeping computerized records but always on 3c stamps, this use on a 24c stamp is a phenomenal rarity, with 1995 P.F. certificate

The Horse Head and Union Soldier's Head cancellations are two of the more famous fancy cancellations to be used in New York City.

Well-balanced margins, bright shade, neat strike of green 11-bar grid cancel with part of matching circular datestamp at left, true vivid green ink (not a bluish green), accompanying certificate comments on imaginary "lightened staining" which is simply not the case, tiny corner perf crease at top right not mentioned on certificate, inconsequential considering the rarity of this high-value 1861 Issue with a green cancelVERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN OUTSTANDING AND EXTREMELY RARE HIGH-VALUE 1861 ISSUE STAMP WITH A TRUE GREEN CANCELLATION.
This is the only example of this shade we have offered with a green cancel since keeping computerized records.

24c Blackish Violet (78c). Deep rich color and proof-like impression, well-balanced margins, neat 7-bar grid cancel, three tiny tears at topVERY FINE APPEARANCE. A SCARCE USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1863 24-CENT BLACKISH VIOLET, WHICH IS ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT SHADES OF THE 1861-66 SERIES TO OBTAIN IN ANY CONDITION.
Our census of Scott 78c, available at our website at http://www.siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/78c/78c.pdf , records a total of 44 used examples of this issue, of which only 37 have been certified as genuine by the Philatelic Foundation. We also record nine on covers, plus three unused, for a total of 56 potential examples. Several need to be reexamined to confirm the shade.
