The plates used to print 2c Black Jack stamps failed to provide enough space between subjects for the large 12-gauge perf holes. Consequently, most examples have perfs touching the design on one or two sides. The scarcity of centered copies multiplies exponentially when the Z Grill is factored into the equation.

3c Rose, Z. Grill (85C). Original gum, lightly hinged, fresh color, skillfully reperfed at rightFINE APPEARANCE. THE 1868 3-CENT Z GRILL IS EXTREMELY RARE IN ORIGINAL-GUM CONDITION.
Despite the skillful reperfing at right, this is quite attractive and rare in original-gum condition.

A cursory examination of major name-sale auctions turned up three other blocks of four: one offered in the Caspary sale, one ex Ishikawa with selvage at right, and one ex Lilly and Klein. The block offered here is ex Sinkler.
