Tanner's German Ointment. Elaborate engraved advertising cover depicting a woman at top and man at bottom inside of ornate frames, clear strike of "Jordan N.Y. Dec. 30" circuar datestamp with matching "PAID 3" in arc used to Horner N.Y., with original 1854-dated enclosure from Tanner discussing search for a musical quartette and for plans of a concert around an Italian tenor who was a pupil of Mendelsohnn, fresh and Very Fine, an unusual and attractive design, with 2016 P.F. certificate
3c Dull Red, Ty. I (11). With extra vertical line outside of left frameline, large margins to just touched tied by light strike of circular datestamp on small ladies cover with design showing seated woman in garden with birds and flowers to Pownal Centre Vt., Very Fine and attractive design, with 2011 P.F. certificate
3c Dull Red, Ty. II (11A). Tied by blue "Norfolk Va. Jul. 16" circular datestamp on lady's embossed cover to Webster Mich., with beautiful multicolored 1853-dated enclosure with chromolithographed design depicting man and woman in a horse-drawn winter carriage, written and signed by Martha Haines Butt, some overall soiling, Very Fine and colorful use, Martha Haines Butt (1833-1871) was the author of one of five novels written by southern women in response to Uncle Tom's Cabin and was part of the so-called southern literary nationalism that started to emerge in the 1850's, this cover and letter are both historic and visually spectacular

Tied by well-struck circle of V's, "New-York Jan. 29" circular datestamp on all-over "Charles Scribner & Company, Publishers of Guyot's Geographies & Wall Maps" advertising cover depicting a woman and a globe to Tuscaloosa Ala., with original 1868-dated enclosure of Scribner stationery, Very fine and attractive design, with 2013 P.F. certificate

Group of six better covers on exhibit pages, including a lovely lace over red Valentine envelope with red Providence R.I. double-circle datestamp, "Merrymans Monthly Magazine of Fun and Recreation" advertising cover, block of five on cover to Germany, George B. McClellan Patriotic design, also No. 64b on Hartford Conn. "Charter Oak" illustrated cover, a few minor flaws to be found but overall a nice group

Horizontal pair, left stamp separated a bit roughly into design, tied by corks, Philadelphia "Carrier Dec. 26 5th" circular datestamp on red brown "The Equitable Life Insurance Society" illustrated advertising cover depicting a warrior holding a shield over the head of a mother and child, to local address, additional advertising text on back, missing part of top flap, stamps with light creases, still Very Fine, a beautiful design, with 2010 P.F. certificate

Comet of 1899 Post Cards. Two used and seven unused post cards relating to the comet of 1899, the two used in Germany, two are in black and white and the others are very colorful with humorous themes including a shop selling comet pills, Very Fine, a fascinating group
2c Carmine, Ty. I (319). Tied by "Charlotte N.C. May 25 9PM 1904" wavy-lines machine cancel on multicolored Osborne & Co. Farm Implements advertising cover to Greenville S.C., back with illustrations of equipment, front with illustration of woman in an absurdly large bonnet with two horses and with stamp collar, Very Fine and attractive, accompanied by two additional colorful advertising covers for American Cotillion and Carnival Works and Algoma County Fair with Nos. 279 and 279B, a gorgeous trio of covers

Jul. 13 6:30PM 1907" duplex datestamp on multicolored White Mountain Refrigerators illustrated advertising cover depicting a girl and leaping cat with icicles around the edge of the cover to Hardwick Vt., additional four-panel illustration on back, receiving backstamp, Very Fine, a beautiful advertising cover

Jul. 27, 1908" wavy lines machine cancel on multicolored Gold Seal Champagne illustrated advertising cover depicting a bottle of champagne with central figure of a woman surrounded by grape vines, to Penn Yan N.Y., receiving backstamp, Very Fine and choice, a colorful use

Sta. 1910" machine cancel on orange cover with De Laval Separator Co. illustrated corner card to Earleton Kans., illustration depicts a woman in apron happily separating cream, additional advertisements on back, small stain at top and also small piece out at top (both of little consequence), Very Fine appearance, a beautiful cover, ex Belasco and Bailar
2c Carmine, U.S. Automatic Vending Co. Ty. II (344). Tied by "Brockton Mass. Aug. 21, 1911" waving flag machine cancel on Brockton Fair illustrated cover depicting a woman in formal clothes with umbrella almost kissing a horse with "When Thoroughbreds Meet" humorous text, to Chicago Ill., stamp lifted to confirm identification and then hinged in place, cover with small filing holes at top
VERY FINE. A TRULY REMARKABLE COVER IN MANY RESPECTS -- THIS IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL OF THE SIX RECORDED COVERS BEARING THIS ISSUE, AND IT IS ALSO A RARE COVER FROM THE BROCKTON FAIR OF 1911, WHICH WAS ONE OF THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS FAIRS IN THE COUNTRY AT THE TIME.

Mar. 7, 1913" machine cancel on multicolored The Simmons Self Balancing Cream Separator illustrated cover to Fresno Cal., depicting a woman operating one of their machines with pastoral landscape in background, additional advertising on back, Very Fine, a fantastic design and a beautiful commercial usage, ex Belasco
2c Carmine, Schermack Type III (409). Tied by "Chicago Ill. Apr. 26, 1916" wavy-line machine cancel on cover for the Mandel-Ette One Minute Camera, depicting a woman photographer, back with colorful illustration of offices of the Chicago Ferrotype Co., Very Fine, the Mandel camera could be loaded with special tintype postcards in daylight, the card only had to be transferred into the development tank (attached to the camera) where the photo was finished within one minute, our interpretation of the design based on norms of the time is that they were illustrating it was so easy to use that even a woman could use it, lot includes two snapshots

Women on Covers -- Traditional Themes. 37 covers or cards displaying what we would consider traditional themes, many household such as woman on a scale for Howe Scale Co., ad for cleanable refrigerator with No. 279B, a woman who looks unnaturally happy with her clothes wringer machine used with No. 319, two with same theme showing "You see my wife but where is my mother in law? Find Both", few others with traditional themes such as one with multicolored Flexible Flyer, few small faults, overall a Very Fine and wonderful group
Women on Covers -- Traditional Themes. Eight covers, each with a theme we would consider traditional, such as Liberty, advertisements for publishers of geographical works, National Livestock Commission Co., Franklin Engraving, Singer sewing, with a range of issues including 1851, 1869, 1901 Issue, few small faults, overall a Very Fine and attractive group, also includes two unused Patriotics
Women on Covers -- Progressive Themes. 60 covers all relating to women or illustrating women, the themes are ones we would consider somewhat progressive for the times in which they were used, includes an excellent group of covers signed by female aviators such as Bettie Lund, Elinor Smith, Florence Barnes, Jean La Rene and others, also 2c Bank Note will illustration of woman in a corset, a woman fishing, a woman driving, a woman astride a beer barrel having fun (5pf German stamp on back), oversized postal card with Scott 300 illustrating a woman in a toga, overall Very Fine, an excellent representation of women outside of the kitchen
Exhibition and Fairs-Related Covers. 14, including one from 1899 Los Angeles Free Harbor Jubilee, 1900 Paris Exposition with green label and clear exposition cancel, 1900 Nashville Street Fair, three from St. Louis World's Fair, 1905 Lewis & Clark Centennial, Dayton Industrial Exposition (1910), one from California Diamond Jubilee, few others, unifying theme in addition to the topic is the depiction of women on all of them ranging from Liberty to working women on a 21-foot wide typewriter on display at the Panama-Pacific Exposition, few minor faults of little consequence, a Very Fine and colorful group
