Mostly full to large margins except close at bottom, tied by blue pen strokes on folded letter with large blue "R" handstamp (Recorded Letter), red "New York 5 cts. 23 Feb." (1846) integral-rate circular datestamp and matching "Paid" arc, cover with some edgewear, skillfully cleaned, Very Fine appearance, very scarce, Philadelphia's post office was the first to apply a marking to indicate that a letter was registered, the "R" marking was only applied to incoming letters and the large "R" on this cover was used until October 1849, ex Pope
