Sale 1155, Lot 3148, Steamboat and WaterwaysCanada to Vermont via Lake Champlain, 1832, "Steam-Packet Franklin. Lake Champlain. Capt. R.W. Sherman". Large red circular handstamp on folded cover to Grand Isle Vt., part of original letter enclosure datelined "Chambly 19th Sept. 1832", endorsed at top "Care of Capt. Anderson", Very Fine and scarce, the Steam Packet Franklin traveled Lake Champlain between St. John, Canada and Whitehall N.Y., this handstamp was in use from 1831-35

Aug. 25" (1853) circular datestamp on cover to White Sulphur Springs Va., small edge stain at top, still Very Fine, this marking for the 5c collect fee plus 1c way fee was originally applied to stampless covers and was obsolete when struck on stamped covers, it was applied to mail travelling on the James River & Kanawha Canal
