EXTREMELY FINE STAMP WITH A GREENISH BLUE "CROSS" CANCEL. A STAMP WITH GREAT VISUAL APPEAL.
Ex Koppersmith (illustrated on the front cover of Sale 765) and Dr. Morris. With 1987, 1991 and 1995 P.F. certificates. There has been some debate about whether the cancel is true green (it was described as such in a May 19, 1987 Siegel sale) which accounts for the string of certificates over a short period of time.

VERY FINE. AN INCREDIBLY ELABORATE AND RARE CANCELLATION USED IN SAN FRANCISCO. VERY FEW ARE KNOWN.
The origin of this cancel is confirmed by a cover offered in Sotheby's May 14, 1978 auction of the Juhring collection (lot 824), which bears a 15c 1869 Pictorial and 3c Bank Note with the same cancel used to Switzerland. The Klein sale also contained a 90c 1869 stamp with this cancel.
