Complete unused set, artfully mounted in a large frame with engraved scenes of Columbus and allegorical figures surrounding, two 50c 1892 Columbian silver commemorative coins included in the mounting, colors on some stamps are a bit faded and no doubt some small flaws would be found if disassembled, still Very Fine appearing and a striking display piece, Scott value for just the 50c-$5.00 stamps (assuming no gum) approximately $4,000.00
1c-10c Columbians (230-237). Unused, mix of Mint N.H. and hinged, each graded including Nos. 230 Mint N.H. P.F. VF 80, 231 Mint N.H. P.F. VF 80, 232 lightly hinged P.F. $3.00 Olive Green, Columbian (243a). Choice centering with well-proportioned margins, rich color, long and full perforations, trace of magenta cancel at top and at rightEXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE $3.00 OLIVE GREEN COLUMBIAN ISSUE WITH A MAGENTA CANCEL.
The dollar-value Columbians are rarely found with centering that would qualify for a high numerical grade, but in used condition they are further handicapped by heavy registry cancels, which almost invariably knock points off the final grade. The $3.00 offered here is extraordinary not only for its precise centering and wide margins, but for the light magenta cancel.
With 2008 P.F. and 2011 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $4,850.00). Only three examples of the $3.00 Olive Green Columbian grade higher (at 98) -- none with a colored cancel.
