Sale 1298, Lot 2147, Philippines

PHILIPPINES, 1901, $5.00 Dark Green (225). Original gum, lightly hinged, exceptional centering with wide and balanced margins all around, deep rich color on bright paper

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE PHILIPPINES 1901 $5.00 DARK GREEN, GRADED XF-SUPERB 95.

The underlying stamp, Scott 278, is difficult to obtain with such choice centering. Only 782 were overprinted for use in the Philippines, making this exponentially rarer in such a high grade.

With 2004 P.S.E., 2010 and 2013 P.F. certificates (XF-Superb 95).

Sale 1298, Lot 2150, Philippines

PHILIPPINES, 1903, $5.00 Dark Green (239). Mint N.H., choice centering and margins, deep rich color, fresh in every respect

EXTREMELY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING AND RARE MINT NEVER HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE PHILIPPINES 1903 $5.00 DARK GREEN. ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND IN MINT N.H. CONDITION WITH EXTREMELY FINE CENTERING.

Only 746 were issued. With 2009 and 2015 P.F. certificates (XF 90). The underlying stamp, Scott 313, is also exceedingly difficult to find in the higher grades — the highest grade awarded is a 90 (five at that grade, last one sold for $12,000 in 2006). The example offered here is likely the finest with the Philippines overprint in existence.
